Description of the attraction
Tanah Lot is a rocky formation that formed outside the island of Bali. On this rock stands the Tanah Lot temple, popular among tourists and sacred for the Balinese, which is considered a center of pilgrimage. Pura Tanah Lot is located in Tabanan district, 20 km from Denpasar.
From a distance, the rock on which the temple is located resembles a ship, such outlines of the rock were given by the ocean waves that washed it for many years. The church was founded in the 16th century. It is believed that the Hindu Nirartha founded the temple. He was a wandering priest, during one of his travels along the southern coast of Bali, he noticed a beautiful rock in the sea and decided to stop there. Nirarthu was met there by fishermen and lodged for the night. The next morning he called the fishermen and said that they should build a sanctuary on this rock to worship the Balinese sea gods. There is another legend according to which Nirarthu brought to this rock a ray of divine light that emanated from a spring on this rock.
The Tanah Lot Temple was built and has been part of Balinese mythology for many centuries. Only true believers can enter the temple, they climb the steps that are carved into the rock, and the rest stand at the foot of the rock. At low tide, you can drink water from the spring, which is considered holy.
Tanah Lot Temple is one of the seven sea temples that are built around the coast of Bali. Each of the sea temples is erected in the field of view of the next, they form a chain along the southwest coast of the island.
In translation, the name of the temple sounds like "land in the sea", which corresponds to reality. It is worth noting that you can get there only through a small isthmus that connects the island of Bali with the rock and only at low tide. At high tide, the island is surrounded by water, and people get to it via a special ladder.
