Description of the attraction
Mount Kitzsteinhorn is part of the Hohe Tauern mountain range in the Central-Eastern Alps and is located near the commune of Kaprun. The height of the mountain is 3203 meters above sea level. It was first conquered in 1828 by local climber Johann Entasher. When experienced skiers hear the name "Kitzsteinhorn", they understand that this is a glacier of the same name, which is located on the top of the mountain. Snow lies here even in the summer months, so the skiing season stretches out almost the whole year. Kitzsteinhorn is recognized as one of the highest skiing areas in Europe. The total length of the local ski slopes is 41 km.
Not only sportsmen dream of climbing the glacier, but also ordinary tourists. Especially for them, at an altitude of 3035 meters, an observation deck is equipped, from which a magnificent panorama opens up to the famous resort of Zell am See and the Hohe Tauern nature reserve, the largest in Austria. To get to the site, you should successively ride on three lifts. The lower lift connects the valley with the station located at an altitude of 911 meters. The upper one raises tourists to the level of 3029 meters. The observation deck is located on the roof of the station. There is also a panoramic restaurant nearby.
Previously, from the first station to the summit of Mount Kitzsteinhorn, you could climb on a special funicular, but in 2000 it caught fire. At this time there were people in it. 155 people died. It was decided not to restore the funicular, but instead a suspended cable car was built.
