Description of the attraction

The castle of the Prince of Oldenburg is located in the region of Old Gagra, on the slope of a mountain, not far from the confluence of the Zhoekvara River into the Black Sea. On the Black Sea coast, a park was laid out where orange and lemon trees, cypresses, palms, agaves were planted.

The famous castle of the Prince of Oldenburg was built in 1902 in the Art Nouveau style. The author of this project was the architect I. K. Luceran. The palace is an amazing structure with a red-tiled roof, balconies, chimneys and a falconer tower, which fits perfectly into the overall ensemble of the castle. In parallel with the construction of his castle, the prince began to implement a plan to create a climatic resort, the so-called "Russian Nice", which became his main merit.

Thanks to the financial investments of the prince, a subtropical technical school and telegraph office was created in the city, as well as water supply and electric lighting. In 1903, in the restaurant "Gagripsh", the grand opening of the climate station took place, this day is considered to be the day of the founding of the resort.

But all this could not save the Prince of Oldenburg from the disaster that had happened. With the outbreak of the First World War, the prince was recalled to St. Petersburg, where he was appointed the Supreme Head of the evacuation and medical unit. He never returned to Gagra. In 1917, Alexander Petrovich went to Finland, and a little later to France. The Prince of Oldenburg spent his last days on the French Cote d'Azur.

1992-1993 Gagra, including the castle, was in the center of hostilities, and therefore suffered greatly - many fires and robberies disfigured her a lot. Today, the tourist business in the city is developing quite intensively. However, the castle of the Prince of Oldenburg is in a dilapidated state, therefore it is temporarily closed to the public.
