Description of the attraction
The princely palace was built in the 18th century in Kotor. It is a single ensemble of the façade of the eastern part of the city together with the city guard tower. In the past, the palace was used as the residence of the Venetian governors, and also served for various military and strategic purposes.
Until 1667, on the site of the prince's palace, there was another medieval building, which was destroyed after the earthquake, destroying its previous governor under the rubble. One of the main architectural monuments of Kotor, the palace is made not by its outstanding architectural and stylistic merits, but by its great historical significance.
Nevertheless, the architectural proportions of the palace can be called peculiar: the length of the building foundation is 60 meters, the width of the building foundation is 6 meters. It is in view of such unusual proportions that the palace has repeatedly suffered from earthquakes. The last and most destructive happened in Montenegro in 1979, after which the princely palace was almost completely destroyed. In addition, neighboring buildings from the Middle Ages were damaged as a result of the earthquake.
The building was gradually restored, today the palace has been brought into its modern form thanks to the owners of small shops on the lower palace floor.
