Description of the attraction
The palace of Prince G. Potemkin-Tavrichesky is one of the most beautiful buildings in Dnepropetrovsk, which amazes with its architecture and grace. His Serene Highness Prince Grigory Alexandrovich Potemkin-Tavrichesky was an outstanding personality, and played an important role in the development of both Russia and Ukraine. He became the founder of such cities as Dnepropetrovsk, Kherson and Nikolaev.
The palace-estate, which the Grand Duke built for himself in Dnepropetrovsk, became one of the first significant buildings in this city. Today it is not known exactly who was the architect who designed this magnificent building, but the authorship is attributed to the outstanding architect of that time I. Starov. The main building of the complex impressed with its magnificence, it included many ceremonial rooms and a huge ballroom. In those days, the cream of society gathered in the palace of Prince Potemkin, and there were legends about the balls that were arranged by His Serene Highness - everyone dreamed of getting to such an event.
Today the palace has somewhat lost its former luxury. The last reconstruction of the palace was carried out in 1952. In the same year, this magnificent building was transferred for the needs of the Palace of Culture of Students named after A. Gagarin.
Years and centuries have passed, and although today the palace bears little resemblance to that beautiful richest complex, it is still worth a visit. And walking through the spacious halls you can feel the scope and spirit of the time when ladies in long ball gowns walked around the palace, gallant gentlemen talked about the politics of Tsarina Catherine II, and the loud voice of Prince Potemkin resounded under the arches of the palace. The palace is located on Shevchenko Square, surrounded by a magnificent park.
