Description of the attraction
The house of John Hughes, located in the city of Donetsk at 15 Klinicheskaya Street, was erected in Yuzovka (the old name of Donetsk) for the Yuzov family. This is the second house of John Hughes in Yuzovka, since the first was on the estate of the landowner Smolyaninova. It was an adobe hut covered with thatch.
The foundations of the John family's house were laid in the fall of 1873, one and a half kilometers south-west of the Yuzovsky metallurgical plant. At first it was a one-story house, the façade of which was built of red bricks.
Initially, John Hughes lived in a house with his eldest sons, and later his wife moved in with them from England with the rest of the children. They didn't like the one-story house very much. As a result, the industrialist hired architects to rebuild a one-story house into a two-story one. John Hughes died in 1889, but his sons continued construction of the building, which was completed in the summer of 1891.
Standing on a hill, the mansion was built of red brick and made in the neo-Renaissance style. On the first floor of the house there was a terrace with an arcade, and on the second floor there was an openwork balcony with round columns, from which an excellent panorama of the entire village of Yuzovka and the metallurgical plant opened. The windows of the mansion were very large and rectangular in shape. In the paved courtyard of Yuzov, there were beautiful flower beds, a fountain and gazebos entwined with wild grapes and ivy.
After the Yuz family moved to England in 1903, the managers and directors of the metallurgical plant lived in their house. During the Civil War, John Hughes' house was partially looted, and during the Great Patriotic War it was badly damaged by an exploded air bomb. In the post-war period, the one-story mansion was repaired, in contrast to the two-story house, which had not been restored for a long time. Until the 1990s, Hughes' house was used for various purposes.
Today, access to John Hughes' house is difficult, since it is located on the territory of a private enterprise.
