Description of the attraction

The village of Weissenkirchen, which means "white church" in German, is located in one of the most picturesque wine regions of Austria - Wachau.

The Wachau region, famous for its wonderful white wines, stretches along the banks of the Danube in a beautiful hilly area. There are several wineries in the region, one of which is in the village of Weissenkirchen. Popular varieties in the region are Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. The oldest vineyard in the village is the Riesling winery, founded in the 13th century. Gruner Veltliner wines are characterized by a rather intense bouquet and freshness. Gourmets may hear the pleasant aromas of white pepper or tobacco, but the most outstanding are citrus and fruit (peach) flavors. The white Riesling grape is grown on steep rocky slopes on the banks north of the Danube. In total, the Weissenkirchen vineyard area covers an area of 500 hectares.

The village itself is home to 1,448 people (as of January 2011), annually about 20,000 tourists come here.

The main attractions of Weissenkirchen include the Wachau Museum, where you can see paintings, everyday and festive costumes of local residents, and get acquainted with the wine-making traditions of the region. Another attraction is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in the 14th century in a mixed Gothic and Baroque style. Two kilometers upstream is the fortified church of St. Michael, built 500 years earlier than the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Lovers of active recreation will find many opportunities for themselves in Weissenkirchen: hiking and cycling trails, golf courses, segway walks, tennis courts, rowing, as well as equipped beaches.
