Description of the attraction
The Great Pyramids are the most famous landmarks in Egypt. They were built in the 26-23 century BC and are located on the outskirts of Cairo on the left bank of the Nile, on the Giza plateau. They are three pyramids - Cheops, Khafre and Mikerin.
The Pyramid of Cheops is the largest pyramid, which is considered the largest man-made structure. One side of its square base is nearly 230 meters. The height of the Cheops pyramid was originally 147 meters, but due to the collapse of the upper blocks, it decreased by 9 meters. The total number of boulders is over two million, each weighing over two tons. The lumps are tightly adjacent to one another, between some it is impossible to hold a knife blade. Each facet of the pyramid is oriented to a different side of the world; you can enter the pyramid from the north. At the moment, there are three burial chambers inside the pyramid with an empty sarcophagus made of granite slabs. The pyramid of Cheops was plundered in ancient times, jewelry and mummies were stolen. To the south of the pyramid is a cedar boat, which is considered the most ancient ship today.
The 136-meter high pyramid of Khafre was erected 40 years after the construction of the Cheops pyramid. The side of the square of the base is 215 meters. Previously, there were twenty-five statues of the pharaohs and the mummy of Khafre.
The Pyramid of Mikerin is the smallest of the three Great Pyramids, with a base side of 108 meters and an initial height of almost 67 meters. Inside it is the only burial room, which is a depression in the rocky base of the pyramid.
Near the foot of Giza there are also the remains of the Sphinx Temple, and a little further there is a monolithic statue of the Great Sphinx. The Sphinx Temple is in a deplorable state, and is a pile of stone blocks of pink granite.
The first pyramid researcher to make a detailed study of the pyramids was Flindris Petrie. He also determined that the sides of the pyramids are strictly oriented along the magnetic poles of the earth.
