Description of the attraction

In the 18-19 centuries, the Volga embankment resembled a port town, completely consisting of marinas and warehouses. And the street along the river was called Millionnaya. A little higher up the Volga were the dilapidated houses of workers and drinking establishments with cheap shops for them.

For the first time, the question of building the embankment was voiced back in 1902, but it was only in 1922 that a project for the development of the coastal zone was drawn up. The project was not approved, as was the subsequent one proposed in 1926.

In 1947, several descents to the river were built, and along the line of the future embankment, they began to build houses - stalinkas. And only in 1959, under the leadership of architect Petrushenko and engineer Delinikaytis, the construction of a four-level embankment began using the method of popular construction. In 1962 (after the first cosmonaut landed on the Saratov land), the street was named "Cosmonauts Embankment".

Now the embankment, one and a half kilometers long, starts from Babushkinoy Vzvoz and ends at the first span of the road bridge connecting the two cities of Saratov and Engels across the Volga.

At the very beginning of the lower tier of the embankment is the Rotunda - a favorite place for artists and couples in love. On the feast of Epiphany, a baptismal font is cut down next to the Rotunda every year. Nearby, a monument to two lovers was erected, adding another address to the newlyweds in the list of the wedding route, and now every newly-minted husband, as a sign of love and gratitude, ties a ribbon to a rather tall monument. Also, the lower tier was looked after by skateboarders and with obvious periodicity they hold local competitions. At the end of the lower tier of the embankment, opposite the quays with steamers, in summer, there are coffee and children's attractions. At the middle levels, decorative flowers, shrubs and trees are planted, under the crowns of which it is so pleasant to sit and admire the Volga landscape. On the upper level of the Cosmonauts Embankment there is a monument to Yuri Gagarin and the building of a river station.

This decision (or proposal) of the head of the region A. I. Shibaev played a very positive role for the development of Saratov and the region: the most beautiful embankment in the Volga region (at least at that time) and the optimal capacity of the bridge for vehicles (at least until 2000)
