Description of the attraction

Kingscote is the largest city on Kangaroo Island and the very first European settlement, founded here in 1836. Today the population of the city is about 1800 people. First of all, it is the tourist, administrative and communication center of the island. There is a school, a modern hospital, a large supermarket, a post office and administration buildings. Of particular interest is the pool that fills at high tide. It is worth paying attention to the building of the hotel "Aurora Ozone Seafront" with a statue of a mermaid: it was opened in 1907 and today is a local landmark.

The history of the development and settlement of Kangaroo Island in general and Kingscote in particular can be found in the local museum "House of Hope" (Hope Cottage). This house was among the first three buildings built in the city around 1850, together with the House of Faith and the House of Mercy (the House of Faith was later destroyed).

In Kingscote, you can see an old mulberry tree, planted in the city's founding year - 1836, and still bearing fruit. Also worth a visit is the local dairy and cheese dairy producing sheep milk and South Australia's last eucalyptus oil plant.
