Description of the attraction

In the city of Syktyvkar of the Komi Republic there is a building of an old zemstvo hospital, currently located at Babushkina street, house 11. The construction of the district hospital took place from 1908 to 1916, as well as in 1951.

At the beginning of the 20th century, in the city of Syktyvkar (then it was called Ust-Sysolsk) there was the only medical institution in the entire settlement, namely the zemstvo hospital, which was located in a rented building. This institution did not meet all the needs of the urban population, whose number increased sharply in those years.

On September 2, 1907, the Ust-Sysolsk zemstvo issued and approved a decree indicating the construction of an additional stone building adjacent to the city hospital. At the end of this month, a special construction commission was formed, which included a representative from the city treasury F. A. Loburtsev, the mayor A. E. Sukhanov, as well as S. V. Popov. The construction of a new extension was planned for the needs of the outpatient clinic, as well as the surgical department of the city hospital. The project, as well as the estimate for the construction of the extension, were fully completed in 1908. The development of the project was carried out by the construction technician Sorokin E. G., while he carried out his work according to the plan, which was proposed by Shmelev, the zemstvo doctor. The total cost of all construction works amounted to 41 thousand 163 rubles 50 kopecks.

Beginning in 1911, the construction of walls by means of masonry was envisaged, for which the contractor Potapov was responsible. The building under construction was built under the roof, while all the necessary roofing work was carried out by the employee V. S. By the middle of 1912, the planned extension for the surgical department of the zemstvo hospital was practically completed, with the exception of plastering work, as well as finishing of vestibules, porches, doors and windows, some painting and other insignificant works.

The necessary ventilation and furnace equipment was brought from Moscow to Ust-Sysolsk. During further construction work, namely in the middle of 1913, all work was suspended. This event occurred due to the fact that large cracks in the plaster were found in the walls of the room intended for operations, as well as in most other rooms. For the purpose of finding out the reasons for the defect that occurred, a commission was formed, headed by the Vologda architect Ostroumov and the engineer Poryvkin. After identifying the reasons for the defects, construction was again in full swing. According to the conclusion of the commission, it was necessary to re-lay the cracked walls, as well as change the rafters and re-cover the roof.

As you know, in 1914 the First World War began. In this regard, the mobilization of construction workers and leading foremen was carried out - the construction of a stone extension was suspended. In 1916, the proper construction and finishing works were successfully completed. In the autumn of the same year, the zemstvo hospital was fully housed in the stone building.

In the winter of January 5, 1922, according to the decision of the Regional Public Health Board, a regional hospital was opened in the newly built building, accommodating forty beds, as well as therapeutic, surgical, gynecological and neurological departments. During the period from 1938 to 1997, the city maternity hospital operated here. It is known that in 1951, large-scale construction work was carried out related to the extension of the second floor, which was carried out under the supervision of the architect Tentyukova F. A. The second floor has significantly changed the appearance of the hospital for the better.

In 1997, the maternity hospital was closed, and a year later - in the summer of 1998, the building of the previously existing zemstvo district city hospital was transferred to one of the medical faculties of the Komi Republic, namely the state Kirov Medical Academy.

Today the building is under state protection as an architectural monument.
