Description of the attraction
The House of Jozef Mehoffer is a branch of the National Museum in Krakow, dedicated to the Polish artist, graphic artist, stained glass painter and one of the largest figures in the Young Poland movement, Jozef Mehoffer.
Jozef Mehoffer was a student of Jan Matejko and was educated at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow and later at the Vienna Academy of Arts. Mehoffer is considered a master of art and “everyday” graphics (illustrations, posters, book covers). Also, among his works there are portraits of famous people.
Józef bought his house, which currently houses the artist's museum, in 1930, being already famous. The house in which Mehoffer lived for 16 years served as both an artist and a workplace and a cultural center, where comrades from the Young Poland movement, as well as friends and students, gathered. Jozef Mehoffen died in 1946.
The house-museum has been completely restored in the form that it was in the years of the artist's life. The idea of creating the museum belonged to Jozef's son, Zbigniew Mehoffer. The family vacated the house only in 1979, after which work began immediately. The museum was opened in the early 90s, Zbigniew did not live up to this moment, all the work on the opening of the house-museum was continued by the artist's grandson, Richard Mehoffer. The interiors of the museum have been reconstructed based on archival photographs and memories of family members.
The exhibition currently occupies 16 halls with a total area of 400 square meters. The exhibition features about 120 paintings and drawings, a collection of Japanese prints and other memorabilia.
