Description of the attraction
Government House - a building built in Cetinje by 1910 by the Italian Corradini, is a mixture of Renaissance and Baroque styles. Its dimensions according to the plan are 66 by 52 meters. At the beginning of the twentieth century, this building was actually the largest in tiny Montenegro. During the period of its existence, the House of Government accommodated, in addition to the Montenegrin government itself, parliament, post office, telegraph, printing house and theater.
Since 1989, the Government House has been converted into a city history museum. Museum visitors will be able to get acquainted with the true treasures of the social, cultural and political past of Montenegro: from the Paleolithic to the present day. A total of eight expositions are presented, the total area of the museum is 1400 sq. meters. It contains more than 1,500 exhibits, rare photographs and approximately 300 historical documents.
The ancient centuries in the museum are presented not only with samples found during excavations, but also with reproductions of frescoes, as well as maps of the excavations themselves. The hall dedicated to the Middle Ages displays pieces of furniture, jewelry that once belonged to members of royal families, etc. XVI-XVII centuries are represented by various documents about continuous wars with the Ottoman Empire.
The XVIII-XIX centuries in the exposition plan are devoted to the active opposition of the Montenegrins to the Turks, as well as the beginning of the liberation movement. One of the most interesting and unique exhibits presented in the museum is the Turkish flag with traces of bullets, found after the battle of Vuchi Do, key for the independence of Montenegro (1876).
In addition, the museum also displays the uniform and military ammunition of the Montenegrin troops, as well as documentary evidence of the fate of Montenegro during the bloody Second World War.
