Cyprus Wine Museum in Erimi

Description of the attraction

Cyprus has long been renowned for its fine wines. The history of winemaking on the island goes back more than one thousand years. So, one of the centers of winemaking in Cyprus is Limassol, whose vineyards are more than 150 years old. Just 17 kilometers west of the city is the small village of Erimi, which has always played a significant role in the production of wine, moreover, it was located at the intersection of the most important trade routes, which contributed to the development of this industry. in addition, next to it there is an ancient castle, which previously belonged to the crusaders and gave the name to the famous wine "Commandaria", the recipe of which is considered the oldest wine recipe in the world. It was this wine that the English king Richard the Lionheart called nothing less than "the wine of kings and the queen of wines."

The museum was created on the initiative of the composer Anastasia Guy in 2000 in one of the local mansions. There, on two floors, you can see several expositions at once, completely devoted to the process of wine production and storage, as well as the history of Cyprus winemaking. The collection of the museum also contains a large number of vessels of various shapes, where this noble drink was kept. The greatest value in the museum is considered to be a small red jug, which is more than 2500 years old.

In addition, the museum has an excellent collection of the best wines of Cyprus, which is kept in basements and cellars. There is also a tasting room where you can not only taste wine, grape juice and traditional Cypriot dishes, but also buy a bottle of your favorite drink.
