Description of the attraction

On the island of Santorini, not far from the resort town of Kamari, there is an interesting Wine Museum. Grapes have long been considered the most important agricultural crop of the island of Santorini. Archaeological excavations near Akrotiri have shown that grapes were grown on the island as early as 3,500 years ago. The specific soil of volcanic origin and the hot dry climate create ideal conditions for obtaining quality raw materials.

The Wine Museum is located on the territory of a private winery, which was created back in 1870 by the brothers Grigorios and Dimitris Kutzogiannopoulos. The museum is set up in an underground natural cave, which is located at a depth of about 8 m, while its length is about 300 m. This is the only museum of this kind in Greece. It took 21 years to create the museum. The project was fully funded by the Kutzogiannopoulos family.

The exposition of the museum acquaints visitors with the history of wine production and the life of winemakers on the island, starting from the 1600s. The museum has a good overview of all the stages of making wine in chronological order and the whole range of equipment used. Today, wine production is carried out using the latest technologies, but visitors to the museum will take a short excursion into the past and get acquainted with ancient production technologies. The museum exhibits include an old wine press dating back to 1660. The tour is also accompanied by an automatic audio guide available in 14 languages (including Russian) and various sound effects. At the end of a fascinating excursion, you can taste the four best wines of the factory.
