Description of the attraction

In New Bar today you can see the Monument to the Liberators of Bar. It was erected in memory of the heroes who bravely defended their native land. This attraction is located in New Bar, not far from the city post office.

At the heart of the material from which the monument was made, the surviving fragments are literally parts of the architecture of the former Bar: here you can see gravestones, family coats of arms, gate beams, and many other elements. At its core, this monument is a serious independent exposition telling about brave freedom fighters. The monument for local residents is also a symbol of the destruction of the dictatorship of the Turks and the proclamation of independence.

This monument refers tourists to the times when the Ottoman Empire actively claimed the modern Montenegrin territories, and the problem of the liberation of the city was very acute. In the period from the 16th to the 19th centuries, Bar was occupied by the Turks, which did not pass without leaving a trace for the city: minarets, mosques, Turkish baths appeared, as well as the clock tower and aqueduct, which are famous today. Despite this, Bar remained Catholic, the archbishop did not leave the city.

The end of the 19th was marked by the defeat of the Ottoman Empire by Russian soldiers who liberated Bulgaria and the Balkans. All these feats inspired the Montenegrins to raise arms against the Turks. The liberation of Bar began in 1878. For two months, the battle continued, the city suffered significant damage: warehouses with powder barrels were blown up. In connection with this incident, it was decided to erect a monument from the wreckage of the old city. The construction of the New Bar began a little later, off the coast, in the Pristan region.
