Description of the attraction

In the cemetery, everyone is equal - there are no friends or strangers here. Memorials at the German Cemetery remind once again of those terrible hostilities where millions of soldiers and officers, ordinary civilians, died.

During the siege of Sevastopol by fascist German troops, more than three hundred thousand German soldiers and officers were killed. Most of the bodies were sent to Germany, and the rest remained to rest in the Crimean land. For decades, the mass graves of German soldiers were not equipped.

Over the past decade, German funds have been working on the arrangement of such places. So, in 1998, near the village of Goncharnoye, near Sevastopol, work began on the construction of the German Memorial Cemetery. It was founded at the initiative of the German People's Union. Ukraine transferred part of the land to Germany for unlimited and free use, according to an intergovernmental agreement (1999), precisely for the creation of a memorial complex for the burial of soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War.

In 2001, the cemetery was opened. The remains of soldiers from more than three hundred and seventy cemeteries of the Crimean peninsula are buried here. The territory of the cemetery is properly equipped, fenced and guarded. In the center of the cemetery there is a memorial cross two meters high. The maintenance of the cemetery lies entirely with Germany.

Similar cemeteries exist in 41 countries of the world, including seven cemeteries in Ukraine. The names of more than seven thousand German soldiers of the Wehrmacht were identified using medallions found at the place of death and can be found in the Book of Memory. The book indicates the place where the soldier was called up and the place of his death, and according to the diagram, you can find the exact place of burial. Tourists coming from abroad more than once in the Book found the names of their relatives and distant relatives.

Now the number of those buried is about twenty-five thousand officers and soldiers, and almost all of them are entered in the Book of Memory. The number of burials (German People's Union) is expected to be increased to forty thousand. At present, reburials continue, the remains of soldiers killed in various cities of Ukraine are brought here, it is predicted that this cemetery will be the largest in the country.
