Description of the attraction

Zavalnoye cemetery in Tobolsk is the oldest cemetery in the city. The name of the cemetery is associated with its location beyond the former northern border of Tobolsk - an earthen rampart, erected in 1688.

For the first time, the Zavalny cemetery became known in 1772. Until that time, there were only parish cemeteries in the city, which were located near the city churches. After the plague epidemic that took place in Russia in 1771, the governor forbade burying the bodies of the dead near churches. It was necessary to take the bodies to a specially arranged cemetery located behind the Earthen Shaft.

The Tobolsk necropolis is the burial place of people who, during their lifetime, glorified not only the city, but the country as a whole. Here are buried the writer P. Ershov, the poet P. A. Grabovsky, historian of Siberia - P. A. Slovtsov, artist and archaeologist M. S. Znamensky, poet D. P. Davydov, researcher of Siberia - A. A. Dunin-Gorkavich. The wife of A. N. Radishcheva - Elizaveta Rubanovskaya, father and sister of D. I. Mendeleev.

The cemetery contains interesting samples of gravestones in the classicist traditions of the late second half of the 18th - early 19th centuries. Since the foundation of the Zavalny cemetery, a wooden temple was erected on its territory in honor of the Seven Youths of Ephesus. In 1776, by order of the Tobolsk governor D. Chicherin, it was rebuilt into a stone church. The monastery was consecrated by the Tobolsk Archbishop Varlaamov (Petrov). The cemetery temple of the Seven Youths of Ephesus is the only temple in the Tyumen region that did not close during the difficult years of persecution.

A public garden was built near the Zavalny cemetery, where there is a rotunda with a sculptural composition. The bronze composition is dedicated to the feat of the wives of the Decembrists who followed their husbands to distant Siberia.
