Description of the attraction

The City Museum is located in an old mansion in the center of Villach. The museum was founded in 1873 by the architect Karl Andreas. The museum has changed its location several times: in 1935, the museum moved to a historic building on the Kayezra Josefe square. However, during the Second World War, a bomb hit the building. Nevertheless, the collection was practically not damaged, because it was taken out of the museum building in advance. In 1960, the museum settled at its current address in Widmangasse. About 50,000 exhibits are housed in an old mansion on an area of 800 square meters.

The collection of the museum introduces historical exhibits representing the art and culture of the city. Villach is known in Austria for its mining industry, which is why the city museum also has a collection of minerals that have been found in the region. The specialized exhibition "Villach and the World" presents geographical maps, views and plans of the city and region from the 16th century. The museum houses exhibits such as cannons from the time of Napoleon, medieval iron sculptures, precious jewelry, coins, Roman bricks, bells from the early 17th century.

The museum also displays a collection of paintings, among which you can see the works of the brothers Joseph and Luis Wilreuder, landscapes by Jacob Kanchiani, the painting by Thomas von Willach "Six Saints" from 1470-1480, as well as works of art of the 20th century.

The City Museum has a library, which contains a large collection of books, photographs and documentary documentaries. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum hosts temporary specialized exhibitions.
