Description of the attraction

The Nikolai Gogol House Museum is located in the center of Moscow, on Nikitsky Boulevard, in an old city estate. The manor complex was built in the 17th century. In the courtyard of the estate there is a monument to Gogol, made by the sculptor N. Andreev. The monument was erected for a significant date - the 100th anniversary of the birth of the writer. The house is made in the Empire style. It was in this house that the writer spent the last years of his life.

Gogol settled on Nikitsky Boulevard in 1848. He was invited by close friends, people spiritually close to him - Count A. P. Tolstoy and Countess A. G. Tolstaya (nee Princess Gruzinskaya). Gogol loved Moscow very much. In 1832 his debut piece “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka” was very well received here.

In Moscow, he was surrounded by writers and cultural figures. He met with writers and poets: Lermontov, Turgenev, Baratynsky, Davydov, Ostrovsky, Vyazemsky, Ogarev, Zagoskin, Danilevsky. With artists Aivazovsky and Fedotov. With composer Verstovsky, violinist and violist Gurilev and many other outstanding personalities.

Evenings of Ukrainian songs were held in the house on Nikitsky. In the hall on the second floor, Gogol and the Tolstoy dined together. Here Gogol read his works. Here they listened to music. In this house, 10 days before his death, Gogol burned in the fireplace the manuscript of the second volume of Dead Souls. Here he died in February 1852.

On March 27, 2009, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the writer, a new permanent exhibition was opened at the Gogol House-Museum. The exposition was called “N. V. Gogol is a mystery of the third millennium”. The guest of honor at the ceremony was the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Avdeev. The concert program was conducted by the People's Artist of Russia Svyatoslav Belza.

The exposition of the museum was as meaningful as possible. Excellent specialists took part in its creation. The team was led by the famous museum designer L. V. Ozernikova. The exposition is located in the main building of the complex, in the suite of halls on the first floor. The expositions are arranged alternately: "Hallway", "Living room", "Cabinet", "Inspector" hall, "Memory Room", "Incarnation" hall. Each exhibition has a main subject. It has been turned into an installation and expresses the symbolic essence of the exposition. In the hallway it is a chest, in the study there is a desk, in the living room there is a fireplace and an armchair - in the hall of the "Inspector General". In the memory room there is the death mask of Gogol taken by the sculptor Ramazanov.

The second floor of the estate is occupied by an exposition introducing Gogol's books, research works on the life and work of the writer. Here you can see portraits of the owners of the house, lithographs of memorial sites associated with the name of Gogol, engravings.

Farewell to Gogol took place in the Church of St. Tatiana at the university. The burial took place at the cemetery in the Danilov Monastery. Later, in 1931, the writer's ashes were reburied at the Novodevichy cemetery.
