Description of the attraction

About 30 monuments to N. V. Gogol have been installed in different countries of the world, most of them are located on the territory of modern Ukraine. One of the first monuments to the great writer in the country is the monument to N. Gogol in Velikiye Sorochintsy.

It was here on the Poltava land in the village of Velyki Sorochintsy that the famous Russian writer was born. From the pen of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol came out such brilliant works as: "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka", "Mirgorod", "Christmas Eve", "Taras Bulba", "Dead Souls", "The Drowned Woman" and "The Inspector General". His immortal creations are well known and highly regarded all over the world.

The inhabitants of the village of Sorochintsy decided to perpetuate the memory of the great compatriot in 1909, when they celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Gogol. In July - August 1911, at the fairground in the center of the village, work was carried out to create a monument to the writer, funds for the creation of which came not only from Poltava region, but also from different parts of Ukraine and Russia. The author of the project was the St. Petersburg sculptor I. Ya. Gintsburg. The bronze monument was inaugurated on August 28, 1911. The sculpture depicts Gogol sitting in deep thought.

At the opening ceremony, porcelain, metal, silver wreaths and wreaths of fresh flowers, as well as books, embroidered towels, musical instruments and small portraits of the writer were laid at the foot of the monument. After the celebrations, all these relics were transferred for storage to the Velikosorochinsk Teachers' Seminary named after N. V. Gogol, and some of them - in the wing of M. Trokhimovsky.

The monument to N. Gogol in Velikiye Sorochintsy is included in the State Register of Monuments of Monumental Art of National Significance.
