Description of the attraction

The Art Museum in Basel is a large public collection of Swiss art. The richest collection of the museum is based on a large collection of paintings by the local collector Basilius Amerbach. The collection of the museum was constantly replenished, mainly due to gifts and wills of various wealthy citizens and collectors. The publisher and urban artist Samuel Biermann bequeathed to the museum not only the collection he had collected, but also half of his acquired fortune on the condition that his money would be spent on the purchase of paintings by contemporary Swiss artists, therefore, the works of many Swiss artists did not go unnoticed.

This museum is home to the world's largest collection of works by artists from the Holbein dynasty. Basilius Amerbach and his family were on friendly terms with the Holbeins, so they got many of the works of artists. It is in this museum that you can see a two-meter painting by Holbein depicting the dead body of Christ, which so shocked Dostoevsky in its time.

The exposition of the museum is located on two floors. On the ground floor, you can see the works of masters of the 15th-19th centuries, such as: Holbeins, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt and others. There are works by the impressionists Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. On the second floor there is a collection of sculptures and paintings of the 20th century. Here are the works of the so-called Cubists, including Pablo Picasso. Also in the museum you can admire the works of the Constructivists, Dadaists and Surrealists. The most famous of the latter is Salvador Dali.
