On the banks of the small Kur stream and the Tuskar river in the 9th century, a settlement appeared, which we now know as the hero city of Kursk. In those days, the Kur stream was a full-flowing river, in honor of which, as some local historians think, the city got its name. Other scholars believe that the name of Kursk was influenced by the Varangians, who passed by water to the south through the local lands. As you know, they called their settlements "chickens". Finally, the residents of Kursk themselves, having placed an image of partridges on their own coat of arms, adhere to the version that the city was named because of these birds that lived in the nearby forests. Modern tourists are more interested not in the name, but in the quite practical question of where to go in Kursk, where to have a good time.
Kursk is a big and interesting city. There are a lot of ancient monuments and newer sights installed in recent years, so the excursion program will not disappoint any guest.
Kursk is 500 kilometers from the capital. The fastest way to overcome them is by plane. Air transport flies here from Domodedovo all year round. In the warm season, Kursk Vostochny Airport can be reached by air from St. Petersburg, Sochi and Anapa. For those who, for some reason, do not like airplanes, we recommend going to Kursk by train or bus.

The house of the treasurer, built in the classical style in the 18th century, is given over to offices. The luxurious building of the Noble Assembly, in the design of which you can see features of the Baroque and Renaissance, belongs to the Philharmonic.
Where to go for free
The main square of Kursk is called Red … The square was founded by order of Empress Catherine II on the site of residential quarters that burned down at the end of the 18th century. Now the main post office and the House of Soviets are located on the square, where the city fathers sit. Nearby is the Pervomaisky Park, where various attractions operate, including the Ferris wheel. However, it is just pleasant to walk in the park at any time of the year.
You can see the main local attraction for free - memorial "Kursk Bulge", which, rather, resembles a square with monuments stretched out in one line - the Triumphal Arch, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Church of St. George the Victorious.

Kursk in winter and summer
Despite the pleasant weather in the summer months, when the air warms up to +20 degrees, residents of Kursk prefer to spend their free days outside the city, cycling around the neighborhood, hiking, picnicking on the banks of numerous streams and rivers.
In winter, not only residents of the city, but also its guests get on skis. Ski tracks will be equipped in two local parks - in Solyanka and the park of the 50th anniversary of the Komsomol. A comfortable descent was made on the Svetly passage, to the beginning of which a funicular raises. There are ski rental offices near all the slopes, and snowboards are also rented from the latter.
Some Kursk schools flood skating rinks in the open air, where kids can play hockey. More well-groomed skating rinks can be found on Teatralnaya Square and on Soyuznaya Street.
