Orly is an international airport located south of Paris in the hamlet of Orly. Before the opening of Charles de Gaulle Airport, Orly was the main airport in Paris. It currently remains the country's busiest airport with domestic flights.
The airport consists of two terminals and occupies a little more than 15 square kilometers. Expansion of the airport in the future is not foreseen due to the ban of the French authorities. At the end of the 20th century, it was decided that the airport could receive only 30 million passengers a year, and this figure will not be increased. Due to the proximity of two settlements - Orly and Villeneuve-le-Roy, residents of which are disturbed by the constant noise from aircraft taking off and landing, there is also a ban on night flights. All planes that arrive in Paris at night land at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport.
Back to basics
The history of Orly airport began in the 1920s, when long hangars were built near the commune of Orly for the needs of the military. During the Second World War, the airfield was occupied by the Germans: the Luftwaffe base was located here. In 1946, the Americans were already in charge of Orly, who soon handed over the management of the airport to the French. Orly turned into an international airport and 2 years after reopening it has already served 215 thousand passengers annually. At the time, it was considered the main airport in Paris. It was even called simply Paris Airport, but sometimes the name Orly was mentioned in the press. It stuck with him after the opening of Charles de Gaulle airport.
Terminals in Orly
Expansion and modernization of the airport continued until 1993. It was then that the West Terminal was rebuilt. The airfield complex includes:
- Terminal South, built in 1961 under the direction of the architect Henri Vicariot. The eight-story building, 200 meters long and 70 meters wide, has a glass façade. Two floors are located underground and are used for technical needs. In 1966, the building was extended to 700 meters. Passenger traffic immediately increased from 6 to 9 million people a year;
- The western terminal, which appeared at the airport in 1971. By that time, passengers were served in Halls 2 and 3. In 1986, the fourth hall was built. Hall # 1 appeared only in 1993. The terminal can handle up to 6 million passengers;
- the Orlyval railway line, which was created in the early 90s of the last century to provide communication between the two terminals and transport passengers to the RER line.
