Rimini in the Italian province of Emilia-Romagna is not included in the list of cities popular for so-called excursion tourism. People come here, to the famous Adriatic resort, which offers its guests about 15 km of wide beaches with clean sand, mainly in summer.
Having settled in one of the faceless three-star hotels (and in Rimini all hotels, with some exceptions, offer the same level of service), tourists suddenly discover that they have arrived in a rather ancient city, a well-known transport hub of the ancient world, built at the junction of two important trade routes of the Ancient Roman Empire. - Via Flaminia and Via Emilia, a city with its legends and business cards.
Rimini knows how to surprise, so a beach holiday will certainly be diluted with excursions and restaurant trips. Where to go in Rimini, so that later remember not only the Adriatic Sea and the blinding sun?
Ancient monuments
Remember the famous aphorism "Cross the Rubicon"? This was the name of the river that Julius Caesar crossed with his troops on the way from Gaul to Rome. Then, and this is 49 BC. e., he also captured the small town of Arimin, which is now called Rimini. The Rubicon River can still be seen. It is a modest stream located north of the historic city center.
Very little has survived from the ancient forum, from the rostrum of which Julius Caesar urged the townspeople to join his legendary campaign. The remains of antique columns are located in the Tre Martiri Square, which got its name in honor of the partisan heroes who were shot at this place at the end of the Second World War.
On one side, the square is formed by the avenue Augusta (corso di Augusto). There are two more ancient monuments at its different ends. One of them is the Triumphal Arch of Augustus, dated 27 BC. NS. The arch was erected in honor of the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus. Thus, the empire marked the end of the construction of the important Via Flaminia, which began in Rome. The front facade of the monument is turned towards the capital of Italy. During the Middle Ages, the arch was used as an entrance gate to the city. High fortifications were added to it, of which only fragments have now survived.
On the opposite side from the Arch of Augustus is the Roman Bridge of Tiberius, which was erected in the second decade AD. NS. It is now in normal condition and is used to drive vehicles. The five-arch bridge was built of limestone, bonded with a special solution, which included volcanic ash.
Renaissance attractions
Rimini, like any self-respecting Italian town, has its own legendary ruler, whose name is associated with several local historical sites at once. This is Sigismondo Malatesta - a famous condottiere, tyrant, tyrant, but at the same time a collector of a wonderful and incredibly amorous guy. He had three spouses. He sent the first to the chopping block, the second he personally killed, but he loved the third for the rest of his life. Her name was Isotta degli Atti. They say that at first he fell in love with her voice, and only then he fell in love with everything that came with it.
One of the most interesting architectural monuments of Rimini is the Temple of San Francesco, which in the press and everyday life is named in honor of its creator, the Temple of Malatesta. In fact, this building was a declaration of love for Isotta. The temple, in which Catholic and pagan motifs were intricately intertwined, was built by the then popular architect Leonbattista Alberti. The sacred building remained unfinished: the customer, exhausted by the struggle with the Pope, simply did not have enough money. Not far from the entrance are the tombs of Malatesta himself and his three wives. The sarcophagus of the third, beloved, wife is immodestly named - "The Sanctuary of the divine Isotta". Among the treasures of the temple, which are definitely worth seeing, are the frescoes by Giotto and della Francesca.
Two streets from the temple is a Romanesque castle called Sigismondo, the former residence of Malatesta, and now an ethnographic museum. The fortress was designed with the help of Brunelleschi. Malatesta himself participated in laying the first stone in the foundation of the fortification. Every Saturday there is a huge market next to the Sigismondo Fortress.
Where to go from the city
You don't have to spend your entire vacation in Rimini. You can and even need to get out on a one-day excursion to neighboring amazing towns with their own atmosphere, from where you will not want to leave. Italy is a country where bus and train connections are developed, so you can easily do without a rented car.
What to see outside of Rimini first?
- Cesenatico. Only 23 km separate Rimini from the cozy resort, where there are three attractions, and all are worthy of the closest attention. The first is an old canal designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The second is the Museum of Historic Ships. The exhibits are located just on the da Vinci Canal. The third is the stunning LidoLido restaurant, where fish, seafood and rabbit are deliciously prepared;
- Santarcangelo. There are two regular buses from Rimini. It is a small town famous for its powerful 13th century castle;
- Ravenna. This city is located an hour's drive from Rimini. The easiest way to get here is by suburban train. Towns and villages along the coast in Emilia Romagna were subjected to massive bombing during the Second World War. Fortunately, in Ravenna, several ancient buildings, known for their magnificent mosaics, have survived from destruction. In the 6th century Basilica of San Vitale, find a mosaic depicting Justinian and Theodora; in the 5th century mausoleum of Galla Placidia, a fresco of the young Christ. In the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, there are so many mosaic drawings that it is not possible to single out any one. Another attraction of Ravenna is the place where Dante is buried;
- San Marino. A dwarf mountain state, whose area is a little more than 60 square meters. km. It is connected with Rimini by an excellent asphalt road. What to do in San Marino? Yes, the same as all other tourists: walking along the narrow streets, visiting the three citadels of San Marino, taking pictures against the background of cliffs and abysses, buying souvenirs.
In Rimini with children
A child in Rimini will simply have no time to be bored. First you need to visit the local dolphinarium with him. It is always interesting to look at the representatives of the deep sea, which you can accidentally meet the next day right while swimming in the sea.
Kids will also love the water activities in two water parks - "Aquafan" and "Beach Village". Both of them are located in one of the villages on the Rimini Riviera - Riccione. Slides, swimming pools, recreation areas and a lot of fun - this is what awaits the guests of the water parks. The highlight of Aquafan is the pool with ocean waves, Beach Village will be remembered for its interesting shows.
There are two amusement parks in Rimini and in neighboring cities. Mirabilandia is located near Ravenna. It has access to its own beach. A ticket to this park allows you to enjoy the beach and all water attractions throughout the day. Fiabilandia is to be found in Rimini. Kids will like it more than teenagers. Huge castles and labyrinths are built here, and guests are entertained by animators.
Together with the child, you can go to the park “Italy in miniature”. Under the open sky, on green lawns, here are collected models of many famous sights of Italy and other countries. A monorail road has been laid over the exhibits.
Dances and dinners
Summer vacation is unthinkable without incendiary sultry parties. Most DJs from all over Italy move to the sea in the summer. Roman experts on incendiary melodies move to Ostia, Bolognese occupy the beaches of Rimini and its environs. The best night discos on the entire Adriatic coast are to be found near the sea. The dancing starts at 11pm and continues until 5am. So that vacationers can move from one night dance floor to another, a special night bus route operates in the city.
It is impossible to name the exact addresses of the best clubs: they change their location every year. But still, there are several cherished establishments that have remained in the same place for many years. These are Paradiso at 26 Via Covignano, where you can sit with a cocktail in one of 7 bars, and Prince at 49 Via Tre Baci, where a large swimming pool is attached to the dance floor.
Lovers of tasty and satisfying food will find many cafes and restaurants in Rimini, where exquisite delicacies are served for relatively little money. You can have a great time at the Acero Rosso restaurant. Book a table in the maple-planted courtyard. This place has a good selection of appetizers and first courses. Be sure to try the local seafood tortelli.
You can go to the cafe "Dallo Zio", located in the center of Rimini. The prices here are set low, and the dishes are simply masterpieces of the culinary art. The original illustrations hung on the walls by Tonino Guerra himself, the famous screenwriter and friend of Federico Fellini, can be considered an extra reason to look here.
One of the popular tourist catering establishments in Rimini is La Brasserie. People come here to try traditional Italian dishes: pasta, pizza. These hearty delicacies are washed down with wine or beer. A special menu has been created for children.
Low prices are set in family restaurants, where Italians themselves prefer to have lunch and dinner. These restaurants are owned by the same family, all of whom are involved in cooking and serving customers. Typically, these restaurants are located in residential areas, away from tourist spots. Rimini has a great family tavern called "Frankie". It is famous for its delicious fish soup, which is made from fish that had swam in the sea in the morning.
