Resting in beautiful Greece is comfortable at any time of the year. It depends solely on the purpose of your trip and the time you will be there. However, most tourists go to the country in order to appreciate the local historical sights, taste the national cuisine and swim in the warm waters of the three seas washing Greece.
Beach season
You can soak up the beaches of Greece, starting from the second mid-May, when the temperature of the air and water is already warm enough. The country receives the first flow of tourists in May, and at the end of October the beaches are gradually emptying, as the weather becomes inclement.
The beach season can be conditionally divided into several periods when it is more comfortable to rest. May and June are ideal travel destinations for couples or seniors. At this time, there is still no such heat on the territory of the country as in other summer months. In July and August, it is very hot in almost all resorts in Greece. The exception is Rhodes and Crete, where the average air temperature is lower than in other areas of the country. However, it is better to plan your vacation not in the middle of summer. This issue is especially relevant for those who are not able to stay in the open sun for a long time.
At the end of October, the beach season is considered officially closed and the time comes for other equally interesting events in the tourist life of Greece.
Ski season
The country has many resorts known for a high level of developed infrastructure in the field of winter sports. Some of these are Kelaria and Fterolaka, where a significant number of tourists flock every year to enjoy the picturesque landscapes and try their hand at snowboarding and skiing.
The season opens at the beginning of November, when there is snow in many mountainous regions of the country and the temperature drops to minus marks. At the same time, optimal conditions have been created in the resort areas, including comfortable accommodation, food zones, the presence of slopes of varying difficulty and other range of services that allow you to relax with pleasure. In addition to exercising, local spa hotels can offer wellness and full body therapies.
At the end of March, the active holiday season ends and it is replaced by the time for swimming in the sea and sunbathing on the beaches.
Season of holidays and excursions
There are many special events in the Greek calendar, which are usually celebrated in spring or winter. If you decide to travel to the country at this time, then you will have a unique chance to feel the colorful culture and get acquainted with local customs.
Among the most significant holidays are:
- New Year and Christmas (December 31, December 25);
- Carnival "Raguration" (January 6-8);
- Festival of Lights and Kites (Clean Monday);
- Treasure Hunt Carnival (January 17);
- Carnival of Wine (Clean Monday).
Each of the celebrations is accompanied by cheerful folk festivals, mass events, the organization of masquerades and the participation of the best creative teams of the city. Participating in Greek holidays is a great opportunity to experience Greece from a different perspective.
From January to May, you can also visit the historical sites, famous all over the world and which are the most important cultural heritage of the country.
Sale season
Twice a year there comes a time when large supermarkets arrange sales and prices for fur products fall several times. Greece has long been famous for the production of fur products, so most of the lovers of fur coats come here.
The first season of all-out discounts starts after the Christmas holidays and lasts about six weeks. Athens is considered the center of sales, as most of the shops and factories are concentrated here, selling not only fur coats, but also clothes of the best world brands.
The second time they come to the country for shopping is in July and August. The cost of furs at this time drops to 50%, which is certainly profitable, even taking into account the price of a plane ticket in both directions. At the same time, the choice is huge, and the quality of products has remained high for many years and is not inferior to other competitors.
Climate of Greece
The peculiarities of the geographic location of the country determine any climatic changes that occur during the year. Located in the southern part of Europe, Greece is characterized by a Mediterranean subtropical climate. This type of climate is characterized by hot summers and warm winters accompanied by rains. In the north of the country, average temperatures are cooler than in the south and can vary depending on objective circumstances.
Spring in Greece
The first manifestations of spring are already felt at the beginning of March. This is manifested in the swelling of tree buds, abundant flowering of plants, an increase in air and water temperatures throughout the country.
Rain can be observed in March, mainly in the morning and evening hours. The air temperature reaches + 15-17 degrees this month, and the water warms up to + 14-15 degrees. At the end of the day, a cold snap and wind is possible, which gradually changes its direction to the south.
In April, the weather gets warmer and warmer due to the increase in sunny days. In the southern regions during the day the temperature rises to + 19-22 degrees. There are fewer rainy days.
May is a month when the air warms up to + 23-26 degrees, which indicates the onset of stable warm weather. At the end of the month, there are several hot summer days in some parts of Greece. The rains in the last spring month are still falling, but not with such force.
Summer in Greece
In June, in almost all resorts of the country, an increase in air temperature up to + 28-31 degrees is observed. The hottest islands in early summer include: Crete; Corfu; Kos. However, in June, the beach holiday in the country is already in full swing and the hotels are filled with visitors. Comfortable weather conditions allow the swimming season to open in late May and early June. Moreover, the water temperature in the first summer month ranges from +22 to +24 degrees.
July is the hottest month of the year. The scorching sun heats the air up to + 30-40 degrees, which affects the activity of tourists. In July, they go to Greece mainly to the northern resorts, so here the heat is tolerated a little easier. The wind begins to blow from the sea, bringing temporary coolness.
The weather in August does not differ much from that of July, and the high temperature regime remains. The exception is the end of the month, when monsoon winds intensify and the air temperature drops by a couple of degrees. In the second half of August, the velvet season begins, attracting those wishing to swim in the warm waters of the Greek seas.
Autumn in Greece
September is the continuation of the velvet season and a favorite month of rest among tourists. Firstly, the sea has already warmed up over the summer, and secondly, there are not so many people on the beaches as before, and thirdly, there is practically no rain. The average air temperature in August is kept at around + 28-31, and the water remains as warm as in summer.
At the beginning of October, the weather is still quite warm, but there may already be short-term rains. The sea water is getting colder every day, so it is better to go to the southern resorts of Greece. The end of October is characterized by an increase in precipitation and high humidity. The minimum air temperature is observed in Santorini and is about +21 degrees.
November can truly be called a real autumn month. The water is cooled down to +18 degrees and is not suitable for swimming. It rains more and more frequently.
Winter in Greece
In winter, positive temperatures are observed on the territory of the country. Snow rarely falls, and if it does, it is usually in the northern regions. In the mountains, snow can lie for two to three months and this is one of the main conditions for the opening of the ski season.
The December weather is characterized by a decrease in air temperature to + 15-13 degrees, which also affects tourist activity. In the first month of winter, people come to Greece for the purpose of shopping or participating in the holidays.
January doesn't differ much from February in terms of temperature. A sharp rise in air temperature is extremely rare. Locals call such days "alkeonides" after the name of the bird, which breeds its offspring precisely during the January warming period.
Most of February is dominated by strong winds and rains, replacing each other at an enviable frequency.
