Among the closest neighbors of Russia on the political map of the world, Bulgaria is one of the favorite and popular destinations for all kinds of recreation. Tourists rush there in the summer to enjoy a vacation on the Black Sea coast, and in winter - to ski in the Balkan resorts. When is the best time to relax in Bulgaria to catch the warmest sea? When to fly to Bulgaria if your goal is perfect snow cover on the ski slopes? We will be happy to share important and useful information with you.
Beach season
This is exactly what the southernmost Bulgarian seaside resorts are saying responsibly already during the May holidays. Too much heat has not yet been observed, but adult tourists can comfortably sunbathe and even swim in the first decade of May. For children, the best weather for a beach holiday comes later - in late May and early June.
The "schedule" of readiness of the country's beach resorts to receive guests looks something like this:
- The first to open the bathing season are the resorts of Sinemorets, Ahtopol and Tsarevo. The southernmost beaches of the Black Sea Riviera of the republic are ready to receive vacationers already in early May. The daytime air temperature at this time rises to + 27 ° С, and although the water seems cool, the thermometers show at least + 18 ° С in coastal waves.
- The strip of resorts from Primorsko to Burgas and Sunny Beach comes into play closer to mid-May. Thermometer columns at this time confidently cross the 26-degree mark in the air and almost reach + 19 ° C - in the sea.
- Varna, Golden Sands and the northernmost points of the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria guarantee comfortable conditions for sunbathing and swimming only closer to June. With the beginning of school holidays, the temperature indicators in the water and on the shore reach solid + 19 ° C and + 26 ° C, respectively, and the rest becomes pleasant and comfortable even for those who like it hot.
The swimming season lasts until mid-autumn. The first to lose ground are the northern resorts, and in the very south, tourists on the beaches can be found even at the end of October. By the way, when asked when it is better to go to Bulgaria by the sea, the regulars of local resorts invariably answer that the velvet season is preferable. At the end of September, the heat subsides, cool breezes occur more and more often, the children's din on the beaches subsides and for those who adhere to moderation in everything, the perfect time to relax comes.
Alpine skiing in the Balkans
When is the best time to fly to Bulgaria to go skiing? Experts recommend counting on the period from December 1 to May 15, but at the same time - choose a winter resort, carefully studying the upcoming weather forecast.
The most famous ski slopes in Bulgaria are laid on the slopes of Pamporovo, Bansko and Borovets. Each has its own fans, among the selection criteria for which climatic conditions are not the last:
- Borovets is located near Musala Mountain, which is the highest in the Balkans. They start skiing here earlier than at other resorts, and with a favorable combination of weather conditions, the season on local tracks opens on December 1. The climate of Borovets is called ideal. Decent snow lays here until mid-April, but snow cannons provide protection for athletes if the weather decides to surprise in the form of unexpected warming.
- Early swallows begin to ride on the slopes of Bansko in the first decade of December, and the last athletes can be found here even in mid-May. The resort is built at the foot of the Pirin mountain range and boasts the absence of strong winds even at the very peak of winter.
- Among its "colleagues in the shop" the Pamporovo resort has a well-deserved fame as the sunniest. There are more clear days here than on other ski slopes in the country. The season lasts from December 15 to April 15, and artificial snowmaking systems maintain the resort's authority in the Rhodope Mountains even in the event of thaws.
The continental and close to continental climate in the Bulgarian ski resorts is a guarantee of sunny, moderately cool weather throughout the skiing season. The average temperature at the height of winter reaches -5 ° C - -8 ° C, but frosts down to -15 ° C sometimes occur at night. Be aware of the possibility of thaws occurring in late winter and early spring. On such days, the thermometer columns not only cross the zero mark, but also rise to + 5 ° С - + 8 ° С. When choosing the time when to relax in Bulgaria and engage in winter sports, study the technical capabilities of the resort you like. The snow cannon system is a good guarantee that you can ride comfortably even in unstable weather conditions.
Holidays with special benefits
Bulgarian health resorts are another important tourist destination, popular with both Western Europeans and Russian tourists. There are hundreds of thermal and mineral springs in the country, the waters of which, in combination with climatic and natural healing factors, are the basis of health and medical programs. If you do not set yourself the goal of combining treatment on the waters with a beach or ski vacation, the question of when is the best time to go on vacation to Bulgaria is not in front of you. Thermal resorts await tourists at any time of the year, and Bulgarian health resorts are open both in summer and winter.
Mud therapy in Pomorie is also possible throughout the year, because the healing mud of estuaries and lagoons is harvested for future use during the summer season.
Economical on a note
When is the best time to fly to Bulgaria if you prefer not to spend too much on flights, hotels, food and various services? Choose the beginning or end of the season, when there are few vacationers on the beaches or mountain slopes, and hotels with restaurants are ready to make substantial discounts in order to attract customers and stand out from competitors.
Do not neglect the early booking of air tickets and places in hotels. If you start planning your trip months in advance, you can catch the best prices and special offers from airlines.
Use the climatic capabilities of the country and your own preferences to find the optimal time for the trip and not overpay. The period after the end of the May holidays and before the summer school holidays is usually not very popular with tourists from Russia, and therefore it is possible to find inexpensive air tickets and book a hotel room at a cheaper price at the end of May.
The second good moment when it is better to fly to Bulgaria by the sea comes in the middle of September. These days, most of the parents with their children have already returned home, and therefore the number of occupied sun loungers on the beaches begins to rapidly decrease. At the same time, prices for accommodation and meals are falling at all resorts in Bulgaria - from the northern to the most southern.
Alpine skiing can be uncovered on the slopes of winter resorts in mid-December. The bulk of tourists will come to the tracks closer to Catholic Christmas, and therefore from December 15 to 25, you have time to practice your favorite sport with less material costs. The peak of the "high" ski and snowboard season flattens out towards the end of March, and the first couple of weeks of April you will be able to ski relatively inexpensively. The only important point is the presence of snow cannons at the selected resort, because without an artificial snowmaking system, the Balkan weather can confuse all the cards for tourists who decide to close the season.
