The United Mexican States has a wide variety of opportunities to satisfy tourist interest. Here you will find the snow-white beaches of Cancun, whose beauty invariably brings the resorts of North America to the highest lines of the ratings, and the treasures of the ancient civilizations of the Aztecs and Mayans with gray pyramids, who do not know the rest from curious travelers. Divers and yachtsmen, fishermen and lovers of national cuisine, admirers of the magnificent Frida Kahlo and connoisseurs of the Baroque architectural style are ready to answer the question of when is the best time to relax in Mexico.
Let's take a look at the map
The geographical location of Mexico determines two types of climate prevalent in its territory: subtropical in the northern part of the country and tropical in the rest. In addition, the nature of the weather is strongly influenced by the relief of a particular region and the proximity to the oceans washing the coast of Mexico.
The main interest for most tourists coming to Mexico is, firstly, the region of the Yucatan Peninsula, where the beach resorts of Cancun, Tulum and the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are concentrated, and, secondly, the Pacific Ocean of Acapulco.
The Yucatan Peninsula is more popular with Russian tourists. Its weather features attract thousands of nationals annually to the shores of the Caribbean:
- Like throughout the tropics, the Gulf Coast and Caribbean, where most of the beach resorts are concentrated, has a distinct rainy season that begins in late spring and lasts until mid-October.
- The winter months are quite dry and cool enough. At this time, annual temperatures rarely step over the + 28 ° C mark.
- The hottest month in the beach resorts is May, and if you don't tolerate air temperatures above + 35 ° C, you better go to Mexico at other times of the year.
- August September is the time of typhoons. They originate in the Gulf of Mexico, bring hurricane winds, bad weather, heavy rains, strong waves and can pose a real threat to a comfortable beach holiday.
Regarding the water temperature in the Caribbean Sea, you can swim without problems at any time of the year. In winter, on the beaches of Tulum and Cancun, the sea warms up to + 25 ° С, while in summer thermometers in coastal waters confidently record + 28 ° С.
Acapulco is also a pleasant resort in all respects, just an extra couple of hours of summer from the European part of Russia. The average monthly temperature of air and water in the Pacific Ocean at the height of July is + 33 ° С and + 26 ° С, and in January - + 30 ° С + 24 ° С, respectively.
Beach rest and meetings with sketes
If you decide to go to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, you better choose for your vacation from mid-October until the end of the May holidays. At this time, the dry season continues at the beach resorts of the Yucatan Peninsula, precipitation falls much less than in summer, and the air humidity values remain in a sufficiently comfortable zone for a tropical European who is not accustomed to the hot breath of a tropical European.
Try to get to the beach early to take advantage of the early sun, which is not too hot. Immediately after noon, mercury thermometers can reach + 28 ° C - + 30 ° C even in winter.
If you are not very confident in your own abilities and do not like extreme heat too much, choose a hotel on Isla Mujeres. The famous Island of Women boasts constant fresh breezes on its beaches, making even high temperatures more comfortable in this resort.
Mexico can delight naturalists and animal lovers with a unique opportunity to watch whales. For friendly giants, sail across the ocean between late January and mid-spring, when you can go out to sea in Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas to enjoy the play of humpback whales, and in the southern state of Baja California, meet the gray …
On a date with the underwater world and ancient treasures
When is the best time to fly to Mexico if you are a diver? Diving enthusiasts recommend the period from December to March. It is in winter and in the first weeks of spring that the Caribbean Sea in the area of diving sites is the most calm, the water is clear and the visibility is up to 50 meters. In winter, a significant migration of fish takes place in the area of the Mexican coast, and therefore the underwater world looks especially bright and diverse.
Mexico is no less popular among fans of ancient history. The Mayan and Aztec civilizations have left their mark for posterity, and the cities lost in the jungle attract hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists every year. The excursion program usually includes the pyramids of the ancient cities of Tulum, Uxmal and Chichen Itza, and good weather during the trip is an important condition for the implementation of all tourist plans.
To get only pleasant impressions from visiting ancient sites, choose winter or the first half of spring for a trip, when the air temperature in the Yucatan Peninsula area is not too keen to exceed + 28 ° C, and the possibility of precipitation is less likely.
For bright colors
Calendarar and distinctive Mexico is literally replete with a variety of holidays and festivals. In February, for example, a grandiose carnival takes place, which begins before the great fast and is second only to the Brazilian carnival and the carnival on the island of Tenerife. You can take part in colorful processions in almost any city of the country, but for this you will have to book hotels in advance. During the days of the carnival, up to 300 thousand foreign tourists arrive in Mexico.
Mexicans are ready to surprise their guests on other days. There are enough holidays and important events in any city both in summer and in winter:
- In the last days of January, a tequila festival is taking place in Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean coast.
- At the height of July, fans of Mexican and Central American folklore gather in Oaxaca de Juarez for the "Guelagerza" festival.
- In the last days of autumn in Guanajuata you can witness and participate in the most beautiful festival of aeronautics. The festival program includes not only the launch of balloons, but also the participation of live "actors". You can see thousands of giant tropical butterflies in different shapes and colors.
The Day of the Dead invariably attracts the attention of foreigners. If you want to take part in an interesting holiday dedicated to the veneration of departed ancestors, you better go on vacation to Mexico in early November. Dia deMuertos does not look as sad as the name suggests. On November 1 and 2, Mexicans decorate homes and courtyards with altars with their favorite drinks and food, many colors and bright ribbons. Figures of Katrina, which are present in houses and temples, as well as on the graves of the dead, are considered the symbol of the Day of the Dead.
The special cultural and historical value of the Day of the Dead for Mexican culture became the reasons for the inclusion of this holiday in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Useful observations
Fans of vacations in Mexico often do not pay too much attention to the coming rainy season and fly on vacation at this time. The arguments "for" are a small flow of tourists and, as a result, a decrease in the cost of services and accommodation in hotels. Airlines for this period usually significantly lower ticket prices, and therefore you will be able to buy a flight with early booking by a third, or even half, cheaper than in the "high" season.
By the way, tropical showers themselves do not cause any particular problems. Clouds usually collect in the second half of the day and the rains are very heavy, but short-term. The only inconvenience can be high humidity during such periods.
When choosing the right time to visit Chichen Itza, one of the most famous cities of the ancient Mayan civilization, pay attention to the days of the vernal equinox. Exactly on March 20 and 21, at around 3 pm, a whimsical play of light and shadow forms amazing moving figures, as if descending from the central staircase of the famous pyramid. Descendants of the Mayans are sure that it is the Feathered Serpent that appears in front of thousands of astonished spectators.
If you decide to celebrate your wedding in the beach resorts of Mexico and arrange a romantic bounty-style photo session, choose the second half of autumn for your honeymoon. At this time, the probability of precipitation is already minimal, there is enough sun, the heat is not too strong, and the sea is calm and clean. The weather will delight your photographer with ideal conditions for shooting, and you will enjoy a wonderful family photo album for a long memory of Mexico and your wedding.
