Only a few of the hundreds of islands in this archipelago are large enough to accommodate rivers or streams, and therefore the bulk of the waterfalls in Fiji are concentrated on Viti Levu and Taveuni.
Waterfalls on Viti Levu
The list of the most famous and visited by tourists waterfalls on the largest island of the Fiji archipelago looks like this:
- Sawu Na Mate Laya is a 20-meter waterfall on the Coral Coast near the village of Biausevu. The water falls in two ledges, and even in the dry season, this natural attraction of Viti Levu remains quite full-flowing.
- Abaca Falls in Koroyanity National Park is difficult to access, but very beautiful. If you're ready to hike the last few kilometers up the mountains, you'll be rewarded with an unforgettable sight.
- The water stream, which is the Vainuta Falls, falls from a height of about 30 meters into the Luva Gorge. A standard tour to it includes kayaking and a visit to the Fijian village with a tasting of local drinks.
- On the northern outskirts of Suva in Forest Park, travelers can admire another Fiji Falls. Vaisila is only 15 meters high, but the water falls down with unusually beautiful ledges.
And yet the first line in the list of the most visited waterfalls in Fiji is occupied by Paradise near the Sigatoka resort. The height of the water stream is about 120 meters, and below, surrounded by rocks, there is a small lagoon with clear water. Most of Fiji's travel agencies organize excursions to Paradise Falls.
Treasures of Taveuni
They say the island of Taveuni is the world record holder for the number of waterfalls per square kilometer of territory. On the third largest island of Fiji, there are several dozen of them.
The most beautiful waterfalls are concentrated in the Booma National Park, created in 1990. Seven beautiful streams flow down here from a height of over 20 meters and each of them has a natural natural swimming pool. The easiest way is to get to the first three, and even in this case, the hike requires decent physical training and the accompaniment of a local guide with a machete at the ready. The wild jungle surrounding the waterfalls requires caution and comfortable shoes, but you don't have to take bottled water with you - every stream on the island is so clean that it is ideal for drinking.
The stream of the 20-meter waterfall Savulevu Yavonu falls directly into the ocean in the eastern part of Taveuni. It can only be reached by boat, and such excursions in calm weather can be ordered from local residents. If the sea is stormy, it is better to reschedule the walk to the waterfall, because the ocean in this part has many sharp reefs in shallow waters.
