The small Baltic country of Latvia is very popular with visitors. Including as a transit point for passing cars. Therefore, the roads in Latvia are of interest both for ordinary tourists and for commercial carriers.
Traveling on the roads of Latvia
This small state has a whole network of roads. Moreover, there are several categories of transport routes:
- main highways, most of which leave Riga and go to the borders with other countries;
- regional roads and municipal roads covering the entire country;
- numerous forest and private driveways.
Unlike other European countries, there are no toll roads for light transport in Latvia. The only paid site is the entrance to the resort area, popular Jurmala. Tolls for this section are charged from April to September.
Latvia is distinguished not only by an extremely small number of inhabitants, but also by the highest environmental indicators. There are a huge number of forests and lakes here, which makes traveling around the country a real break from stuffy cities.
If the main and regional roads have an asphalt surface, then small passages, the number of which exceeds three quarters of the total number of transport routes here, are gravel or gravel. On the one hand, the quality of such a coating is low, on the other, it is more sparing for nature.
Unfortunately, even the main roads are not exceptionally flat and smooth. Many highways here are very good, but there are often sections with a bumpy road. Moreover, pits and potholes can begin immediately after good asphalt, which makes a trip in Latvia unpredictable and requires special attention from drivers.
Local regulations and driver behavior
There are not so many local residents in the country, but the main roads leading from the borders of one country to another have decent traffic, primarily transit transport. Also, traffic jams, although small, can be found in Riga, the capital of the country. The rest of the paths and passages, as a rule, are few in number, here you can go at your own pleasure.
Residents of the Baltics, as a rule, are distinguished by a calm, balanced character. This also affects the behavior of the drivers. No one is in a hurry here, especially the locals. Violations of the rules are rare here, the general situation on the roads is extremely calm.
The list of violations for which you can get a fine is standard. They are quite loyal to overspeeding - for driving with a slight deviation from the permitted speed limit, you can get off with a warning. But driving while intoxicated is punished extremely severely - it can be not only an impressive fine, but also deprivation of rights and even arrest for several days.
Beautiful and calm cities and wonderful nature of Latvia can become accessible to any tourist, it is enough to come to this small country by your own car or rent a local one. However, you should be careful on the roads - they are not of high quality, and in forests and rural areas they do not have a hard surface at all.
