The Belarusian state is surrounded by several European countries at once and often serves not only as the final destination of the route for tourists wishing to have a budget vacation in a friendly country, but also as a transit point when traveling by car to Eastern or Western Europe. Therefore, the roads in Belarus are full of tourists and passing travelers.
Road network in Belarus
To paraphrase a well-known saying, all roads lead to Minsk. The capital of Belarus, located almost in the middle of the country, is not only an economic and cultural center, but also the starting point for almost all major routes. The network of Belarusian roads resembles a spider's web spreading from Minsk.
Several sections of European highways pass through the country at once, both in the direction from west to east, and in the direction of Ukraine in the south: E28 (Berlin - Minsk); E30 (Ireland - Russia); E85 (Lithuania - Greece); E95 (Russia - Turkey).
Until recently, travel on the highways of Belarus was free. However, since 2013, a toll road system has been introduced. The fare is not high, but the penalty for traveling "hare" can be very significant. At the same time, almost all tourists complain that the payment system is not entirely clear, it is not known where the paid zone begins and ends. However, this does not yet apply to Russian citizens - a passenger car registered in the territory of the Russian Federation is exempt from payment.
Features of local roads - amazing quality and lack of amenities
Belarus can be proud of its roads. They are distinguished by excellent, almost European, coating quality. Thanks to the relentless state control, there are practically no potholes and potholes here. Almost all roads are paved.
It is also worth noting the absence of a strong speed limit even in settlements, so you can drive around the country quickly and fearlessly. The almost constant flat relief of Belarus adds to the comfort of the trip. Of course, the sophisticated traveler will miss spectacular views, but the countryside in this country looks quite neat and pretty.
Violating the speed limit, as well as any other local traffic rules, is not worth it, all violations will be recorded by cameras, so a fine will be inevitable.
The culture of behavior on the roads pleasantly surprises, here you practically will not meet reckless drivers, the traffic is extremely safe and calm. Local road police officers are also distinguished by their courtesy and friendly attitude towards drivers.
However, not everything is so rosy for a tourist in a car in Belarus. Unfortunately, the accompanying infrastructure is extremely poorly developed here and resembles the Soviet Union in its worst manifestations. There are practically no cafes and restaurants along the road, and gas stations are much less common than we would like. The service is also not of the highest quality.
So, going to Belarus, be prepared not only for excellent roads and safe traffic, but also for some tangible disadvantages. When entering the country, it is worth stocking up on gasoline and some food for a snack if you cannot find a fast food point.
