The capital of Switzerland is a nice, cozy city, with all state institutions and institutions that rely on their status. And at the same time, walks around Bern give you the opportunity to enjoy the ancient architecture, cozy streets and squares of the old city, to feel the breath of time.
Historic walks in Bern
If you explore the city on your own, it is important to determine on the map where the main attractions are. Then you need to work out the shortest route through the Swiss capital and hit the road quickly. You won't have to walk too much, because the main "highlights" of Bern are concentrated in the historical center, the most important of which are:
- The prison tower, which today appears in a completely different role;
- Clock tower with moving figures;
- "Bear Pit", which gave the city its name and the corresponding coat of arms;
- a gothic cathedral with a bell tower directed into the sky;
- numerous street fountains, also considered works of art.
These sights can be explored without assistance, but it is still better if there is a guide nearby who will tell many amazing stories about a particular monument, sculpture or fountain.
Walking through the old streets and squares
For many guests of the city, acquaintance with the capital of Switzerland begins from the Kornhaus square, on which there are many monuments of history and architecture. Not without the fountain, which has a terrifying name "Eater of children" and venerable age - it appeared here in 1516.
The main tasks that were assigned to this fountain, in addition to supplying water, were to intimidate the young inhabitants of Bern, to guide them on the right path. It is not known how the children who lived in the Middle Ages treated this educational moment, but today they will not frighten either the young Bernese or his peer who came to visit.
In addition to the fountain with such a terrifying name, there is the Kornhaus on this square, after which the square is named. Connoisseurs of architecture will instantly recognize that this complex was built in the Baroque style. Next to it there is a Gothic church dating from the 13th century, inside it are skillful frescoes that were painted in the 15th century. An even more ancient bell tower is located here, which is considered the main attraction of Bern and attracts many tourists.
