At first glance, Estonia does not seem like a coveted summer destination. The Baltic Sea is not the warmest in the world, and you will not find a special summer exotic at these latitudes, no matter how you try. But after a careful reading of reviews about a beach holiday in Estonia, it becomes clear that the first opinion is often not very correct.
The seaside resorts of Estonia are equipped in full accordance with European standards, and the weather in the Baltic Sea in summer makes it quite comfortable to relax and enjoy the white beaches bordered by pine groves and the cool but clean sea.
Where to go to sunbathe?
The Gulfs of Finland and Riga of the Baltic Sea, washing Estonia from the north and west, provide a solid coastline. Despite the small area of the country, its coast stretches for more than 3700 km:
- Pärnu, on the Baltic Sea coast, has some of the most popular Estonian beaches. The resort status of the city has existed since 1838, when the construction of the first boarding house began in Pärnu.
- The beaches in Haapsalu are famous throughout the Baltics. And it's not only about the clean sea waters and pretty landscapes, but also about the possibility of treatment with healing mud in local health centers.
- Saaremaa has many great beach destinations. In Estonia, this island is generally very popular with tourists. It is especially pleasant to relax in Saaremaa with children: due to the special location of the beach, the water in the sea warms up much faster.
- The Narva-Jõesuu resort received its first guests at the end of the 19th century, when a hydropathic establishment and cabins for swimming in the sea were built there.
Despite the rather northern Estonian latitudes, reviews about the rest on local beaches are always very pleasant, and the service in hotels is rated by guests as quite decent.
Weather features of a beach holiday in Estonia
The climate in the country's beach resorts can be described as transitional from temperate continental to maritime. Winters are mild here, and summers are cool, but quite suitable for relaxing on the Baltic coast.
On the coast of Saaremaa, the swimming season begins with the arrival of the calendar summer, when the thermometers in the water and in the air show a stable + 17 ° С and + 23 ° С, respectively, during the day. The water remains cool enough even at the height of summer, but in the sun mercury columns often show up to + 30 ° C.
The weather is approximately the same for Pärnu. The rainiest summer months here are July and August, but in early summer and September, the chances of catching sunny and dry days are much greater. In the first weeks of autumn, the water becomes cooler, but the air still warms up steadily to + 25 ° C during the daytime.
In Tallinn, it is especially pleasant to swim and sunbathe in August, when in the sea the mercury columns reach + 21 ° С, and in the sun the thermometers can fly up to + 28 ° С.
Metropolitan things
In the north-east of the Estonian capital is the Pirita area with the beach of the same name, where most of the locals and guests of Tallinn who come to the city in summer prefer to sunbathe. Pirita beach is covered with white sand and bordered by a luxurious pine forest, which makes the air especially pleasant, fresh and even healing.
The beach offers picturesque views of the old town. Here you can go fishing on the pier, watch kitesurfers or try to go out to sea on a board with a sail yourself.
Inquisitive beach goers will love a guided tour of the monastery, which was founded in 1407. Its majestic stone buildings have survived to this day and a walk guarantees interesting photos and a lot of vivid impressions.
With a rented car, it is easy to get to the village of Caberneeme, 40 km from the capital. Its main advantage is a two-kilometer beach with pine trees surrounding the white sand dunes. The coastal sunsets at Caberneem are considered the most beautiful in Estonia, and the tranquility and coziness of the resort will especially appeal to families with children and lovers of privacy.
Haapsal downy shawl
The most popular souvenir brought by fans of beach holidays in Estonia in the Haapsalu resort is a handmade scarf, lovingly knitted by local craftswomen. And a vacation in Venice of the North, as the city is called, will certainly be remembered for its wonderful summer adventures on the shores of the friendly Baltic:
- Many museums with an interesting exposition will not let the restless and curious get bored. At the resort, you can get acquainted with the history of the region, learn how the famous headscarves are made, and study the evolution of locomotives in the historic building of the railway station.
- During the holiday season, Haapsalu hosts many cultural events, including blues and violin festivals, "Days of the White Lady", a legend about which local guides will gladly tell, and other concerts, performances and exhibitions.
- In the Matsalu National Park, in the vicinity of the city, there are plenty of opportunities for bird watching enthusiasts. It will be possible to see the inhabitants of the park from observation towers installed in seven districts of the reserve.
Wellness opportunities become the reason for visiting the resort for many of its guests. Sea healing mud was discovered in the first half of the 19th century. At the same time, the first mud baths were built at the resort. Today's programs of local health centers attract many people to Haapsalu who want to say goodbye to diseases of the musculoskeletal system and skin problems.
To sybarites and romantics
In addition to Tallinn's Pirita and the coast in Haapsalu in Estonia, it is customary to sunbathe on the city beach in Pärnu. This resort is called the summer capital, and its infrastructure allows you to get a lot of pleasant impressions from your summer holidays. Hotel prices are slightly higher here than in other resorts, but tours to Pärnu are still popular and are sold out like hot cakes.
Do you want to sunbathe in the bosom of nature, far from the benefits of civilization? Drive to Keila-Joa, 30 km from Tallinn. In addition to relaxing on wild beaches, you will undoubtedly enjoy the views of the most beautiful Estonian waterfall.
