The capital of Moldova is today one of the largest and most beautiful cities in the state. The history of Chisinau begins in the 15th century, but scholars differ in determining the year of foundation. In Soviet historiography, 1466 was called when a settlement with that name was mentioned in the certificate of honor. According to another version, the first mention of a settlement with such a name appears in the letter of Stephen and Ilya, the Moldovan governor, in 1436.

Short

Briefly retelling the history of Chisinau, the following important periods can be distinguished:

  • settlement during the times of the Moldavian principality (from the moment of foundation until 1812);
  • in the status of a city within the Bessarabian province (until 1918);
  • the main city of the Moldavian Democratic Republic (from December 1917 to November 1918);
  • as part of Romania (until 1940);
  • the capital of the Moldavian SSR (except for the period 1941-1944, when the city was occupied by German and Romanian troops).

The history of Chisinau is inseparable from the history of Moldova, knows many tragic and bright pages.

From the origins to the capital of the province

The first mention of Chisinau refers to the charter of the Moldovan governors in 1436, the next - in 1466. In the middle of the 16th century, the Ottoman yoke was established on the territory, these lands were in the center of attention of both Turks and Crimean Tatars. The country and the settlement were in decline, under fear of constant raids from the south - the last invasion of the Tatars dates back to 1781.

The year 1812 for Chisinau has nothing to do with Napoleon and his campaigns, there are military events here - the clarification of relations between the Turks and the Russians, the latter take part of the territory, which is called "Bessarabia". In 1918, an important event for the settlement took place - it received the status of a city, from 1873 it became the main city of the Bessarabian province.

The end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century for Chisinau is characterized by the development of science, production, banks. The development of the city is facilitated by the construction of a railway linking the capital with major seaports, which also contributed to the economic development of the region.

Newest time

In the twentieth century, events began to replace each other too quickly, workers' unrest, strikes and strikes began in 1905. The October events of 1917 in Russia led to the formation of the Moldavian Democratic Republic. But it did not work to gain complete independence, the Romanian troops and the Red Army tried to subjugate the territories.

Until 1940, Chisinau was part of Romania, in June 1940, the territory of Moldova was annexed to the USSR. But a year later, the German occupation began, and only in 1944 came the liberation, then the period of being a part of the Soviet Union. 1990 - the formation of the independent state of Moldova with the capital Chisinau.
