The most Baltic of all Russian cities, Kaliningrad was founded in 1255 at the confluence of the Pregolya River into the Kaliningrad Gulf of the Baltic Sea. The city has many attractions for tourists - museums and monuments, gardens and parks. There are seven embankments alone in Kaliningrad, and the local port is the only ice-free port in the country on the Baltic.
Seven walking routes
The complete list of Kaliningrad embankments contains seven names:
- On the right bank of the Pregolya to the left of the 2nd Trestle Bridge is the Admiral Tributs embankment. Its length is about five hundred meters.
- On the other side of the bridge is the 100-meter embankment of Veterans.
- On the opposite bank of the Pregolya River is the General Karbyshev Embankment. It starts from Oktyabrskaya Street.
- In honor of the commander of the submarine, the Marinesko embankment, located along the Lower Pond, is named.
- The Peter the Great Embankment has been landscaped on the right bank of the Pregolya between Leninsky Prospekt and Butkov Street. It houses the Museum of the World Ocean - one of the most interesting in the city.
- To the left of the railway bridge is the Right Embankment of Kaliningrad.
- Opposite the Kneiphof island with the Cathedral located on it, there is a small and cozy Staropregolskaya embankment.
Views and attractions
The Museum of the World Ocean on the embankment of Peter the Great is of undoubted interest for guests of Kaliningrad. Its expositions are dedicated to shipping and marine life, ocean floor geology and ecology. In the museum halls there are ships on which the USSR Academy of Sciences conducted research, and history buffs will love the collection of ancient anchors and cannons.
From the Old Pregolskaya embankment of Kaliningrad, magnificent views of the former Konigsberg Cathedral open up. The first mention of it dates back to the beginning of the XIV century. The temple was built in the brick Gothic style and today serves as a location for museum exhibits.
The island with the cathedral is connected to the other part of the city by the Honey Bridge, the name of which, according to legend, came from the method of payment for the construction of the crossing: a member of the city council paid off a barrel of honey to the workers.
The Art Gallery is located opposite the Admiral Tributs embankment. The most famous collection of works in it is considered the biennial "Kaliningrad - Konigsberg", which is a collection of contemporary graphics by artists from the Baltic countries.
