The rivers of Portugal form a fairly dense network. Large rivers such as Duero, Tajo and Guadiana pass through the territory of Portugal. The rivers of the country are characterized by a rise in water level in winter and autumn, and a decline during the summer.
Tagus River (Tahoe)
The Tagus is one of the largest rivers of the entire Pyrenean Peninsula, passing through the territory of two countries: Spain and Portugal. The source of the river is in Spain, but now the Tagus ends on the lands of Lisbon (Portugal), flowing into the waters of the Atlantic.
The total length of the current is 1038 kilometers. At the same time, 716 kilometers pass through Spanish lands. Then 47 kilometers of the current play the role of a natural border and the remaining 275 kilometers go through the territory of Portugal.
On the territory of Portugal, the river is called the Tagus, in Spain - the Tagus. The confluence is the waters of the Mar da Paglia Bay, mistaken for the Tagus estuary.
Sadu River
Sadu is one of the main rivers of the country. The source of the river is on the slopes of the Serra de Caldeiran mountains. The total length of the river is 180 kilometers. Sado crosses the country from south to north and completes the journey by connecting to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean (near the city of Setubal). The river passes through the lands of several municipalities: Orique; Santiago do Casen; Grandola; Ferreira do Alentejo; Alcacer do Sal.
There are several dams on the river, and the reserves of these reservoirs are used for irrigation of rice and corn fields. Vegetables and fruits are also grown on the banks of the river. A very rare species of dolphins lives at the mouth of the river, which is found only in these places.
Zezere river
Zesere is a river passing through the territory of Portugal. The source of the river is in the Serra da Estrela mountains (altitude 1900 meters above sea level) near Cantaro Magro.
The total length of the stream is 242 kilometers. The river ends the way, connecting with the waters of the Tagus. The river basin area is 5043 square kilometers. Zezere has several tributaries, and three hydroelectric power plants have been built on the river itself (they generate 700 million kilowatt-hours annually).
Mondego river
The Mondego River passes only through the territory of Portugal and has a total length of 234 kilometers. The source of the river is on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela mountains, and the place of confluence is the waters of the Atlantic (Figueira da Foz region).
Mondego is the largest river that runs through the lands of Portugal. The largest city located on its shores is Coimbra.
Tamega river
The Tamega is a tributary of the Douro River and passes through the lands of Spain and Portugal. The total length of the current is 145 kilometers. The source of Tamega is in the Spanish lands (Galicia region), after which it “goes” to Portugal.
The river is blocked by dams in several places, which makes it unsuitable for navigation in most of the course.
