In 1915, the future idol of millions, V. I. Lenin, hiding from the authorities' persecution, wrote about the capital of Switzerland that it seemed to him "a boring, small, but cultured town." Without doubting the objectivity of the second part of the thesis, Bern's guests note that there is no need to be bored here either. The European capital, which is not too big by world standards, is ready to offer the active and curious a lot of interesting entertainment. It is possible to write political programs in the local comfortable hotels today, but it is much more interesting to go to explore the suburbs of Bern, where historical sights are harmoniously combined with magnificent natural views.

Born in the alps

The canton of Bern is amazingly beautiful landscapes, mountain lakes and majestic waterfalls, described many times in fiction and filmed in dozens of films. Lake Triftsee in the suburbs of Bern can be compared to a newborn baby. It was formed at the beginning of this century as a result of the melting of the Trift Glacier. But this is not the only attraction of these places. Travelers have the opportunity to admire the clear blue waters of the lake from the suspension bridge, which today is considered the longest of the suspension crossings in the Alps.

The bridge is thrown across the lake at an altitude of about 100 meters, and its length is 170 meters. The Trift Bridge was built in 2004 for hydraulic installation work, and after modernization and strengthening, it was opened for tourists and everyone to admire the opening landscapes.

Inspiration for painters

In a narrow gorge not far from the suburb of Bern, the Are River rushes down from a height of 46 meters, forming the majestic Handek Waterfall. It is called the most famous and beautiful in the Alps, and the best views of the natural landmark are opened from the suspension bridge, which stretches 70 meters above the canyon abyss.

The Handek Falls have more than once become a model for painters depicting a seething stream. The most famous painting belongs to the Swiss artist Alexander Kalam, who painted "Handek Falls" in the middle of the 19th century.

From the Emme Valley

The famous Swiss cheese Emmenthal was born in the valley of the Emme River in the suburbs of Bern. For its production, milk is used, which is given by local cows grazing in alpine meadows. Emmental is best bought in its homeland in the commune of Affoltern im Emmental, where it is still produced with the same observance of all old technologies.
