The railway of Abkhazia begins near the Adler station, on a bridge over the Psou River. It passes through the territory of the unrecognized republic, which formally belongs to Georgia.
Earlier, Abkhazian trains belonged to the Transcaucasian Railway, which runs from Tuapse to Adler and Senaki. Traffic along this road has been going on since 1942. The railway was considered a part of the transit route to Armenia and Georgia until 1992. The main station and symbol of the railway communication in the country is Sukhum. The station of this city was rebuilt in the middle of the last century. In 2004, the railway of Abkhazia was restored on the section from Sukhumi to Psou. From the same year, trains began to run along it in the direction of Moscow - Sukhum, as well as electric trains from Sochi to Sukhum.

Electric trains and suburban trains do not run on the Abkhazian railway. You can get to the Abkhazian territory from Russia if you buy a ticket on the direct train Moscow - Sukhum. The journey takes almost 42 hours. The passenger can get to Adler and then change to a bus or suburban train. Electric trains run daily between Sukhumi and Sochi. The ticket price is about 170 rubles. It takes 4 hours to get from Adler station to Sukhumi. A ticket in a compartment costs at least 600 rubles, and a reserved seat is cheaper. The 50% discount is valid for children under 10 years old.
Traveling by train is not the fastest, but a budget way to visit the resorts of Abkhazia. On the route Moscow - Sukhum, trains run every day in the summer. In winter, the train schedule in Abkhazia changes. Trains are sent less frequently, several times a week.

Travel features
The train schedule is highly dependent on the season and holidays. On the way, the train makes stops at intermediate stations: Gagra, Tsandripsh, Gudauta, Novy Afon. If a passenger wants to get to Pitsunda, then he needs to get off at Gagra and then get to the final destination by taxi or minibus.
