A former Soviet republic, Tajikistan is located in the foothills of one of the highest mountain systems in the world. The administrative-territorial division of the republic is somewhat different from other countries. There are two regions of Tajikistan - Sughd in the north and Khatlon in the south-west. The east and southeast of the country is occupied by the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, and 13 districts of republican subordination are located in the center. 17 cities of the country are also territorial entities, including the capital Dushanbe.
Autonomy on the roof of the world
The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan occupies almost half of the country's territory, and remarkable geographical and natural objects are located on its territory. The city of Khorog, the administrative center of the region, borders Afghanistan, and on its eastern outskirts there is a mountain botanical garden, second in height above sea level only to a similar one in Nepal. His collection contains more than four thousand plants from different parts of the world.
The main natural attraction of this autonomous region of Tajikistan is the Ismoil Somoni peak, which was called the peak of Communism in former times. This mountain peak was the highest in the USSR, and many climbers of the planet tried to conquer it 7495 meters before and are trying today. With the formation of a sovereign state, the legendary peak was named after the founder of the first Tajik state.
