Despite the not too strong worldwide popularity, Serbian wines have great potential: the vineyards of this country are located at the same latitude as the legendary plantations of Burgundy and Bordeaux, and the hard work of the Serbs can serve as an example for any nation. But even now, the local wineries are a subject of special pride for their owners and the interest of fans of wine tours.

History and figures

Like many Balkan peoples, Serbs began to develop their winemaking back in the days of the ancient Roman legionaries. This was followed by periods of decline and development associated with wars, epidemics, economic booms and political upheavals. Today, Serbian wines are produced in the context of the revival of the industry, their quality is constantly growing, and the volume of products is increasing.

Only 5% of the total amount of local wines produced is exported, and therefore the easiest way to taste the most worthy examples of excellent drinks is on a wine tour in Serbia. By the way, more than a third of all wines bottled in Serbian wineries are of the high quality category.

Varieties and achievements

The peculiarity of the local winemaking is that the main role is given to local grape varieties. That is why Serbian wines are so original, distinctive and unique. The main volume of fruit comes from the Prokupac variety, the wine from which is distinguished by its rich color and fruity flavors. When blended with Varnats berries, a powerful wine is obtained, in whose aftertaste you can guess blackberries, bird cherries, and pomegranates.

The international jury has repeatedly recognized the best variety of red wines in Serbia "Kremen Kamen" from Cabernet berries from the Negotin region, the best white - "Trijumf Barrique", blended from Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, and "Quet Traminac kasna berba" from the Banoštor region in as a natural sweet.

Where to go on a wine tour?

Light and harmonious wines from Kadarka, Chardonnay or Merlot are best tasted in the Palić region. Winery "Choka" or small wineries - the products of any enterprise in Palic will delight true connoisseurs of grape wine.

You can try the unique "Bermet" in the Fruska Gora region. The secret of making this drink is kept secret. The only thing known about the technology is that the grapes are aged in barrels together with several dozen spicy herbs. "Bermet" with a sweet cake is especially good.
