As in other European countries, transport in Austria is well developed.
The main modes of transport in Austria
- Urban transport: it is represented by trams and buses, in some cities - trolley buses. And in Vienna, there are metro, buses, trams, suburban trains at your service. You can pay for travel on public transport with single, daily and travel tickets valid for 3 or more days (travel passes do not work on night buses). In Austria, travelers are given the opportunity to acquire tourist cards that allow not only to travel for free on any public transport, but also to receive discounts at museums and excursions. For example, in Vienna, the Vienna Card is subject to sale, and in Salzburg, the Salzburg Card. Important: when planning your route, it is worth considering that buses traveling along the same route do not stop at all stops, and after 6 pm the buses may no longer run.
- Rail transport: you can get to Austrian cities by high-speed (IC, EC), regional (R, E), suburban (S) and long-distance trains (OEC, D). If your goal is to save on travel, it is advisable to travel in a small company (3-5 people): you will be subject to the 1 Plus Freizeit Ticket (each subsequent passenger purchases a ticket with a 50% discount). Reduced fares apply to elderly people and passengers traveling long distances. And for children 6-15 years old, 50% discounts are provided (travel up to 6 years old is free).
- Air transport: Domestic flights operated by Austrian Airlines and Tyrolean Airways provide connections from Innsbruck to Vienna, for example.
Taxi
You can call a taxi (there are no private taxis in the country) by phone or go to special parking lots at airports, city centers, and train stations. Don't try to hail a taxi on the street - no one will stop. It is worth noting that at the end of the trip, the driver must issue you a check - otherwise, you should call the dispatch office with a complaint.
Car rent
To draw up a rental agreement, you will need to present an IDP and provide your credit card details (for some car rentals, you will need two card details). In order to avoid misunderstandings, you should carefully read the terms of the lease - in most cases, you cannot go to the countries of Eastern Europe on a rented car. If you violate this condition, you can not only be fined, but also arrested, accused of attempted hijacking.
Keep in mind that you must have a tax voucher to travel on major highways and autobahns - if you do not attach it to your windshield, you will be fined a hefty amount. In addition, you cannot use and transport radar detectors (a system of fines is provided).
