The capital of Finland is considered one of the most livable cities on the planet. Here they take care of the environment, monitor the cleanliness of not only the streets, but also the air, bake pies with cloudberries and gladly receive guests. The latter circumstance is a decisive argument for spending weekends and vacations in the capital of Suomi. Even a simple two-day trip to Helsinki is a great way to make an inexpensive and fun change of scenery.
An impregnable fortress
One of the main architectural sights of the capital of Finland is the Sveaborg fortress. It was erected as a fortification on the islands and since the 18th century the building has honorably defended the capital from attacks from the Gulf of Finland.
The seven islands on which the walls of Sveaborg stand are called wolf skerries. Here are preserved bastions and tools, bridges and churches. On one of the islands, museums are open that tell about the history of the fortress, and the structure itself has been on the UNESCO lists as a world heritage site for more than twenty years.
On Senate Square
In Helsinki itself, in 2 days you can see all its main attractions and memorable places. The main square of the city is named Senate in honor of the institution of the same name once located on it. Today, the mansion is the seat of the Finnish government, and the building opposite houses the departments of the University of Helsinki.
The architectural dominant of the square and the entire old city is the magnificent Cathedral. The Lutheran temple is called Tuomiokirkko, and its main dome was designed and built by the famous master Engel.
To smaller brothers
The Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki is one of the oldest in Europe. It is also located to the north of many of its "brothers", and this is also its peculiarity. The snow leopard is considered the symbol of Korkeasaari, and the zoo's collection exceeds 200 species of various representatives of the planet's fauna.
If your vacation in Helsinki falls in the summertime, the best way to get to the zoo is by ferry leaving from the Market Square. The boat trip will become an exciting adventure in its own right, and the ferry offers great opportunities for panoramic shooting of the capital Suomi. A winter visit to the animal kingdom will provide an equally exciting opportunity not only to communicate with animals, but also to admire the ice sculptures taking part in the annual competition.
