The airport in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is the largest airport in the Sakhalin Oblast and is considered one of the most powerful links in the Russian airport network. The airline is located 8 kilometers from the regional center in the area of the village with the same name as the airport named Khomutovo. The airport's runway is 3.4 kilometers long and has a capacity of over a million people a year, not counting freight and mail. The main company using the airport is OJSC Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport. The enterprise successfully cooperates with many well-known air carriers of the world, including the Russian companies Aeroflot, Sakhalin Air Routes, Vladivostok Avia, and others.
History
The first flights in the history of the airport began in 1945, when, after the liberation of the Kuril Islands from the capture of Japanese militarists, the civil aviation of the region began to rapidly gain momentum. The first flights were carried out on the Khabarovsk - Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk route. Gradually renewing the aircraft fleet, the airport expanded the geography of flights. By the beginning of the 90s of the last century, the airport, fully meeting the requirements of international standards, began passenger air transportation abroad. By 2011, the passenger traffic of the Sakhalinsk airport amounted to almost 800 thousand passengers per year. For comparison: in 2006 the capacity of the enterprise was less than 600 passengers.
Today the airport serves only about 50 flights per day, of which 16 destinations in Russia, and 7 international. However, due to weather conditions, it is often necessary to postpone it indefinitely, sometimes even for several days.
