Description of the attraction

The Education Museum in Gabrovo was opened in 1973 and is engaged in the search, collection, study and storage of written and material monuments of education in Bulgaria. Also, the museum workers strive to show the development of the country from its origins to the present. The museum is located in the east of the city, in the historic building of the secondary school, which was built in 1873.

The exposition of the museum is located in five halls, which are thematically divided: from the Bulgarian education in the 9th century to the present. The total area of the museum is 435 sq. M.

The first hall introduces visitors to the history of Bulgarian education, shows evidence of the first written language, which began to appear in the 9th century. This was due to the fact that in 886 Prince Boris warmly received three disciples of Methodius and Cyril - Naum, Angelarius and Clement. The prince created favorable conditions for them, in which they could freely engage in literary and educational activities. The exposition of the first hall ends in 1835. The second hall is dedicated to the development of Bulgarian education during the period of the National Revival - from 1835 to 1878. It is known that in August 1835, Neofit Rilski opened the first secular school in Gabrovo.

The third and fourth halls of the museum cover the history of education in the country, starting with the Bulgarian school of the era of liberation from Turkish oppression and up to the end of the 20th century. The fifth room features reconstructed classrooms from each school from different eras.

The museum, among other things, contains a collection of books from V. Aprilov's personal library, dating back to different periods - from the Renaissance to the present day. The museum also has a special library with more than 28 thousand volumes. The museum fund consists of more than 60 thousand archival items.
