Description of the attraction
Veliki Tabor Castle is one of the best preserved late medieval and Renaissance fortified castles in mainland Croatia. The castle was built by the Rattkai noble family in the 16th century. The castle remained in the possession of this family until 1793.
The oldest part of the complex performed a protective function, later four semicircular towers were completed around it, and in the 17th century additional buildings were added in the northern part of the building.
The history of the external appearance of the Veliki Tabor castle became known not only thanks to the efforts of archaeologists and researchers, but also thanks to the artist Oton Ivekovic, who captured the castle and its surroundings.
Recently, extensive restoration work was completed at Veliki Tabor Castle, after which a museum was opened on its premises. There is a permanent exhibition and everyone can learn a lot about the architecture and history of the castle and its inhabitants, listen to fascinating stories and legends related to the history of the castle, as well as visit the exhibitions and seminars held here.
One of the most visited expositions of the castle is dedicated to its history. Archaeological, historical and artistic-historical exhibits related to Veliki Tabor are exhibited here. In particular, it presents the latest data on the study of frescoes found on the wall of the local chapel, as well as materials that reveal the specifics of the late Gothic masonry.
Archaeological research on the territory of the castle continues today.
