Description of the attraction

The Church of Peter and Paul in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is one of the iconic sights of the city. The temple was consecrated in honor of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, who are considered the heavenly patrons of this city.

The history of the church began in 1740, when A. Chirikov donated for the village located on the coast of Avacha Bay a camp church, located in a small tent and consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. A little later, a wooden building was built for her. In 1766, the building was moved to the Paratunka River, as there were very few residents in the old place. In 1810 the temple was re-consecrated, but in honor of Saints Peter and Paul. Four years later, a side-altar was added to the church and consecrated in the name of the Most Holy Theotokos. But due to weather conditions and poor quality materials used in the construction, the church building quickly fell into disrepair.

In 1826, the construction of a new church building was completed, which almost immediately underwent repeated reconstruction, rebuilt and renewed, but the location remained the same. In 1834, the facade of the temple was covered with iron.

With the advent of Soviet power, all the temple values were confiscated, after which it was closed and later used as a cinema. Somewhere in the middle of the century, during the demolition of a church building, a very interesting find was discovered - the Gospel in an ancient gold frame.

In July 1989, N. Dementyev, who is the plenipotentiary of the Council for Religious Affairs under the Council of Ministers of the USSR for the Kamchatka Region, announced the decision of the regional executive committee to sell the old building on Panfilov Street to believers. The project of the future temple was carried out by a professional architect. The foundation stone of the church took place on July 12, the day of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. In 1992, the construction of the church, which was financed by believers, was completed.

The Church of Peter and Paul is made in a modernist architectural style, while the domes are customary, golden.
