Description of the attraction
Church of st. Archangel Michael in Veliki Preslav is located in a small beautiful park in the city center. The facade of the building is a miniature part of the right side of the St. Sophia church-monument of St. Alexander Nevsky.
The foundation of the church was laid in 1908, but construction was suspended in 1912-1913 during the Balkan War. Then the work was gradually resumed, but one more war prevented - the First World War and the lack of funds provoked by it for the further construction of the church. Residents of Veliki Preslav began to collect money on their own, using any means - various types of donations, collecting signatures under petitions, and even caroling. Such actions extended not only to the city, but also to the surrounding villages. Any building material was accepted; volunteer labor was often used in construction.
In 1930, the construction of the church was completed, and in 1931 it was consecrated by Metropolitan Joseph. From that moment on, services begin to be held in the church. The painting of the church under the direction of Professor Nikolai Rostovtsev was completed in 1951. Many of the church's icons are part of the history of Veliki Preslav and date back to the time of Tsar Boris I and the establishment of Orthodoxy as the state religion in Bulgaria. In 1952, a new carved iconostasis was created by a group of craftsmen headed by Professor Peter Kushlev. Residents of Veliki Preslav also raised funds for this work.
The church is active. The Temple Feast is November 8th. Now again it is planned to raise funds for the reconstruction of the temple, as well as for the construction of the bell tower.
