Description of the attraction

The Assumption Second Athos Beshtaugorsky Monastery is located in the Stavropol Territory, 10 km from the city of Pyatigorsk. The idea of creating a monastery belonged to the monk Sergius and the hieromonk Ivan. The permission to build a monastery near the Beshtau mountain was obtained in August 1901. The total area of the temple was 20 acres.

All buildings were wooden, only the walls of the monastery were erected from stone. The consecration of the church in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos took place on November 28, 1904. Hieromonk Gerasim was chosen as the abbot of the monastery. The first temple did not last long. In January 1906, due to faulty stoves, the wooden extension to the church and the floor burned down. All property was lost as a result of the fire. With the beginning of spring, work began on the construction of a new church, the construction of which was completed in August 1906.

The conditions of the monastery were rather meager and cramped, but in 1911 another 100 dessiatines were added to the previously allotted monastery land. This slightly improved the position of the temple. However, the monastery did not receive any cash benefits and its own capital from the treasury.

In 1927, after the revolution, the monastery was closed. All the bells were removed from it. In the 20s. here the Motrenkov gang dominated. After some time, the forestry was located in the surviving buildings of the monastery. In the beginning. 40s there was an international pioneer camp where the children of the leadership rested. Local residents continued to fight for the restoration of the temple. However, all their attempts were brutally suppressed.

During the Great Patriotic War, a Soviet military unit was located in the temple. During the offensive of the Nazis under the threat of encirclement from Pyatigorsk and Zheleznovodsk, the soldiers were forced to retreat. For half a year, the temple was under the occupation of the Germans, but they did not touch the remaining buildings from the monastery. But after the war, at the end of the 40s. by order of Beria, the monastery was destroyed.

The revival of the monastery began in 1992. The monastery was being restored in difficult economic conditions. Today the Assumption Second-Athos Beshtaugorsky Monastery is a functioning temple.
