Description of the attraction
The Rembrandt House Museum is located in the house where the great artist Rembrandt van Rijn lived from 1639 to 1656. Rembrandt is a world famous artist, the brightest representative of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. His works are housed in the most famous museums and are considered pearls of museum collections. His mastery of using color and light in paintings to convey human emotions invariably attracts the attention of viewers to his canvases.
The house in the Jewish Quarter, where the museum is now located, was acquired by the artist in 1639. The cost of the house was 13,000 guilders - a huge amount for those times, and even Rembrandt, who was then at the height of his fame, could not pay this amount in full and paid in installments. The house contained a collection of antique art objects: paintings, sculptures, weapons, etc. However, after some time, Rembrandt's affairs were shaken, he was forced to declare himself bankrupt, and his house and property were auctioned off. It was thanks to the auction inventory of the property that it was possible to accurately restore the atmosphere that surrounded the artist during his lifetime. Visitors to the museum can see the living rooms and kitchens of the mid-17th century, as well as the artist's studio.
The museum displays the most complete collection of Rembrandt's engravings - 260 out of 290 made by him. Visitors will be able to see exactly how such engravings were made at that time. In the artist's studio, visitors are shown the process of painting and preparing paints using the technologies of that time.
The museum also hosts thematic exhibitions.
