Description of the attraction
In the city of Skiathos, on the island of the same name, there is the house-museum of the famous Greek writer, one of the best representatives of modern Greek literature, Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911).
Unfortunately, the house in which the great prose writer was born has not survived to this day, as it was sold, and the new owners demolished it. Alexandros Papadiamantis grew up and died in his father's new home (as the plaque on the wall of the building says), which was built in 1860. After the death of the famous writer, the Greek Ministry of Culture declared this house an important cultural monument. In 1954, the building was purchased by the state and has since been owned by the municipality of Skiathos. Here is today the house-museum of Alexandros Papadiamantis, dedicated to the life and work of the outstanding writer.
A small two-story building of the museum is located about 100 meters from the east coast of the city on a narrow street. The house is a typical example of local architecture and well reflects the traditional style and character of the island's buildings. On the left side of the entrance is the living room with a fireplace, in which Papadiamantis spent the last minutes of his life in the winter of 1911. To the right is a small room where the writer's father, being a priest, kept his books and vestments. Later it belonged to Alexandros and was used as a bedroom and study. The furnishings (original furniture and other household items) in these rooms have been preserved as during the life of the writer. An exhibition hall is located on the ground floor, displaying manuscripts, documents, photographs and much more.
The house-museum of Alexandros Papadiamantis is one of the main attractions of Skiathos and is quite popular with tourists.
